View Full Version : still bad fuel economy

no matter what i do to my car it still has bad fuel economy. New sparkies, fuel filter, air filter, ignition leads, reset ECU, new oxygen sensor, regularly serviced and tuned, had fuel injectors sonic cleaned, everything i can think of. Even when i run premium peddy i still get pretty poor fuel effeciency which ive run in the last 5 or so tanks.
So ive given up on conventional methods and am looking for a way to make it better.
Sorry i cant remember who got the fitch fuel catalyst but was it worth it? or the new vaporate which is just out or something like that?

Just as a matter of interest, how long ago did you reset the ECU? I found recently that after resetting mine, the fuel consumption went up quite a bit and it took 3-4 full tanks of fuel to get it back down.
PS: What you you call poor? Got a L/100Km figure?

I've got a Fitch and so has Sharkie - they're not a miracle on the fuel consumption (though they certainly don't make it worse); they're more about keeping the fuel system in peak condition, hence more smoothness and sustained 'between tunes' power, and they keep the Oil clean.
Edit: looking at your profile... maybe your exhaust is too free-flowing? 2.25" on a 2.6 litre 4 cylinder sounds a bit OTT to me. Could this give bad economy?

What type and grade of oil do you use? is it correctly rated? If it is too thick in viscosity it can cause an engine to work harder (more resistance)... just a thought.
Are you sure all your fuel lines and tank is not leaking... fuel evapourates pretty quick.. you might not notice it... even check your fuel filler cap to make sure the seal has not perished.
There is a test you can do on your exhaust too...(is it CO2?) which can check emission content... wasted fuels.
One thing that I noticed after getting all my slotted rotors fitted last weekend is that my brakes are partially engaged while it is bedding in, so when I took my foot off the accelerator the car would slow down much quicker and I could feel the negative drag also... I cant imagine this was doing wonders for consumption either.

this may seem pretty stupid .. but check ya tyre pressure's. My economy, not to mention the drive of the actual car, was shocking, pumped a bit more air into the rubber, now its back to normal.

Good call. That's a good lesson in "check the obvious things first." :)

check tyre pressure regularly which is at 38psi because i have 16" rims.
i run a 15w40 viscosity oil. and replaced tappets to help oil flow(old ones were noisy and sucked).
reset the ECU after i got extractors and exhaust which was 6 months ago.
And the car actually has pretty low rolling resistance so i dont think its the brakes but ill have a look anyway as its somehting i havnt had a look at.
Fuel effeciency was bad before i got exhaust but since ive got exhaust it means that when i punch it, it drinks more.
And what i say as bad is that when i drive like grampa i get about 13L/100kms and when i drive normally, and i define normal as i dont really punch it as in dont really go above 4000rpm, i use about 13.5L/100kms. on the other hand if i punch it occasionally i get up to 14-15L/100kms quiet easily.
Also had timing chain replaced along with sorta an engine reco a bit over a year ago so engine isnt really worn or anything. SO u can see what i mean about i dont know what to do.

im sorry to say but the fuel econamy one the 2.6 4cl are pritty bad anyways
dude u've got extractors and an exhaust.....which improve "flow" hence more air and fuel getting through...... 13l/100 is about as good as its gonna get.
i get about 12/100......u gotta remember althought its a 4cyl....its a pretty friggin big 4cyl....
and if its auto....im suprised yur even gettin 13/100.......
Hell, even us first gens sometimes struggle to get into the 12s!

I can safely say the exhaust isn't contributing much to the economy factor. I had 2.5" piping on the old Astron (don't do it, its bad) and my fuel economy change in proportion to the new way I drive it.
13L/100k on the Astron is about right dude. Sorry to say, but that was much of my reason for getting a new car.

yeh i know they run crap usually but mines running pretty rich. Is there anyway other than something like a unichip which can lean it out?

have you thought about putting it on a dyno....best way to find a problem??? 35$ at our queensland one, also i've looked into getting this diagnostic dynotune (plug into ecu as well as other stuff) thing done by APC and that costs 295$

mine usually around 14L / 100kms
ive got it up to 24L/ 100kms tho

:stoopid:
for my carby auto - 13L/100km seems to be what i get if i drive like a granny... worse when i give it grief

check air mass meter conection get the injectors ultrasonicly cleaned
also try the oxy sensor might be dicky
no matter what i do to my car it still has bad fuel economy.... new oxygen sensor...had fuel injectors sonic cleaned
hes done those

dude i have extractors, 2.5inch exhaust, CAi, rpw oversized t/b; and from where the gauge indicates 1/2 tank left i've got 275km's. All this on a v6 too, i would seriously pay the 300$ like i'm doing to find the problem.

Ive heard of a type of generic chip like a unichip but a no-name brand which is pretty cheap but i dunno how or even if it would handle the MAF sensor or oxygen sensor 'readings' as they are pretty different to most cars. They are supposed to cost about $300 or something.
Also as i said, if it was burning all the fuel then i wouldnt really have a problem but the things running rich and lossing some fuel out the exhaust which is why im not impressed and want a way to lean it out to save fuel and have at least a stoichometric mix of fuel and air.
