View Full Version : What would happen if your intake pipe halved its diameter a cm before the TB?

I pulled off my air intake as I am getting my TB done and i noticed that there is a ring that nearly halves the diameter of the air intake pipe a cm before the throttle body. This is because of my gas setup. I am just wondering what this would do to fuel economy and power etc?

Well theoretically it would really make the performance a fair bit worse. It seems to be a bit of a wiered thing to do though?

it would appear that you need a hell of a lot less air when running gas... therefore it sounds like it would be a total waste of time getting a bigger TB

the Gas mixer you describe would act as a restriction on the intake when at high revs and also under full throttle, does your car run out of puff and lose torque over about 5000rpm? the restriction would be more noticable on petrol. I some times remove the mixer from the inlet on my car when i am out west and can't get LPG because I do get more power on petrol without it there, The design of the one on my car sounds about as restrictive as yours, Mine is all cast alloy, it has a nossle in the centre that is about 1/3 the diameter of the mixer and 3 thick legs to support it so i would say that like yours it would flow less air than the stock TB. I have seen others that are simply a ring with a gap (like the flush in a toilet bowl) or a small arm nossle that allow much better air flow on both fuels.

Is it actually needed? I am wanting to just put the pipe that was on it straight in and remove the ring....will this mean i cant run gas anymore? Is this dangerous removing at all?

You wont have a problem.
There are some air intakes that actually reduce like this to create a 'ram air' effect.

Yes it's needed, unless I'm mistaken this will be your gas mixer ring, which introduces gas into your airstream - without it your car wont go anywhere :P instead or replacing it, if your keen maybe look into getting a bigger diameter one, but before doing that you need to look into wheather it's actully causing any restriction
