hey,
Let me start by saying I know stuff-all about car audio. Help! I recently upgraded my headunit to a basic 4x50 with a pre-out (whatever that is - NFI - but ran some cables from it anyway for future use).
Now the stock speakers still sound crap. Next step - speaker upgrade.
After reading this forum for the last hour, I get the hint that front speakers are more important than the rears. I just want to run off the headunit for the time being.
When buying front speakers - what do I look for / ask for? Size etc? Any recommendations?
& can I mount them (myself?) in the existing holes in the front door - woofer down low & the tweeter against the mirror?
Cheers+thanks.

OK here is the thing, Audio Purists think it is better to do the fronts then the rears, Where as me I like the Night Club effect where you get the tunes pumping from all around you so I recommend doing Both..
It is relatively easy to do the front Speakers as any 6 inch or 6.5 inch speaker will fit, the secret is to get a speaker that doesn't have a Huge Magnet stuck to the bottom of it as this will cause concern when winding your windows up and down..
You will need to have patients and a steady hand...
One slip and BAM you can put a screw driver through a cone and mess things up...
You basically line up four holes on the factory plastic Surround that holds the stock speaker in and Screw in new screw holes...
The Rears can be a little harder depending on what you decide to get ..
for simplicity 6x9's are your best Option..
It doesn't matter if they are a 3-way or 2-way by design as long as they sound good to your ears..
The Stock 6x9 is a tad smaller and narrower to the aftermarket ones so some Hole Tubbing may be required..
The it is a simple matter of lining them up with the factory screw holes and mounting them in..
a 90 degree Screw driver may be required if you intend on doing it your self as the rear window is really close to where the rear screws are..
Tip: look for a 6x9 that has a tweeter level with its outer surround so it will fit under the factory covers.. last thing you want to do is risk thieves knocking off your new speakers..

how many people on er stelth their speakers....
how many people on er stelth their speakers....
how many people on here havea stealty looking speaker install?
well, i think i sorta do. I have stock grills over front and rear speakers...the only way you could probably tell i have aftermarket ones would be if u shined a torch at the grills. oh, and i have tweeters above the grills on the front doors
as for speaker recommendations, 6 or 6.5" speakers will do fine for the front. As for wiring, I make it a habit to run fresh, thick wires of my own into the doors, even though they'll be running off the headunit. (just a bad habit)...plus saves u snipping off the stock plug.
most of the time the speakers u buy won't line up with the stock speaker mounting holes, but you can easily drill new holes for your speakers into teh white plastic bits. oh, and remember to solder your speaker wires to teh terminals for good measure

Yep focus on ur fronts... If you get ur staging right the stereo recording will provide it's own rear fill using just the front speakers.
The sound will seem to come from all around you.
Hertz HSK-165 are a good option, but what's ur budget? What music u into?
Peace

not looking for nose-bleed doof doof heaven, just some good bassy sound for my 80s bogun tunes.
Budget? I'll spend what it takes for a good sound without going overboard.
What is price to spend to avoid buying crap?
Also, these tweeters in the sports/vrx - worth replacing them while I am at it?
thanks.
Like Tim is alluding too, I would still advise you revise the physical postition of them before you mount them permanently.
You might want to have a quick read of this (http://www.fastfoursforumscarclub.com/temp/fhrxstudios/faq.asp#12) to see what I mean.

Those standard speakers will do the job running of a decent headunit, for now. Since those stockies are rated at 20WRMS, headunit power is perfect for them. Moving the tweeter into the kicks may be better for imaging but I would wait till you upgrade.
Does anyone know if those splits run an inline xover or external ( which is highly doubtful )?
I would upgade though to the Hertz splits / Boston S type / Morel 6 / PG Comp6.5 etc all around the $280-$350 mark running off an Audison SRx2 ( $299 ). Will sound awsome, do you plan on running a smallish sub later?

y stealth them, if ya gotta good lookin speaker yt not show it off??

because some people dont like having their cars broken into, interior trims ripped apart and windows smashed for a pair of 'nice' looking speakers.
I had a friend of mine who had 30 dollar strathfield 'pioneer yellow cone' look-alike coaxs in his N13 pulsar.....
2 days after i installed 'em in his car...BAM, drivers side window smashed, speakers gone.

Thanks for the speaker tips - will look for them at the JB sale tomorrow.
With speakers like these, do I need something like an AudisonSR2 to begin with, or can I just get away with my aftermarket 4x50 headunit for OK sound for now?
cheers.
[sub later? need my boot space for kids + crap - don't think I'll ever fit it!]

The Head unit will do fine for the time being..
Amplifiers and power wires and Kids do not mix..
