I think it is caused by electrolysis between the battery post and terminal also aided by the extra oxygen present from the battery charging.
To remove the white build up, tip hot water over the terminal.
battery terminals and posts that are clean and have a good contact tend to powder up less.
There is also a battery terminal protective spray available
i had that... i bought from somewhere (think supercheap) these felt pads you put under your terminals before you connect it back to the battery... worked a treat... provided you clean them well with something abrasive... like a wire brush and some coarse sandpaper
otherwise i've heard of cleaning them up with a wire brush and smearing them with vaseline (can someone tell me if that works?)

Yup, the best way.
Disconnect, wire brush then lightly smear with vaseline.
Make sure that the terminals are covered all over.
That's it.

RuSSiaN grab a can of Coca Cola (AKA Coke) and an old tooth brush. Pour a little Cola on the corroded spots and scrub with the tooth brush. Then clean off with another pour of the Cola. The Cola reacts and disvolves the battery acid. Then follow benau's, BCX7's and spud100's suggestions and apply a protective coating and felt barrier - spray or Vasoline.
A mixture of banking soda and water will have the same chemical reaction in disolving the battery acid buildup.
Hope this helps
