you have to make a new avotar now
hope you got that paint off your tyres :P

To remove the pin striping.. let it sit in the sun, let the body panels heat up, then the stick-on stripes will just peel off nicely.
As for the tyres, who cares.. I get 17"s by the end of the month

Hi Vaeril
Good work I'm also looking at doing something similar to this. Could you possibly give us a quick run down of the materials you used for this price it set you back and any special tricks. I'm basically trying to work out if it's worth me giving it a shot considering I have zero experience in spray painting.
thanks in advance

Really easy...
- Some thin and thick rolls of masking tape (I had 1x 12mm and 1x 48mm) [$1.99 and $4.99 respectively at SuperCheap]
- Plastic primer [$12.95 for a can (big can)]
- 2x big cans of desired colour paint [$12.95 each]
That was pretty much it, if you ensure that the surface is nice and clean then it will turn out nicely...
I did 1x coat of primer (good stuff it is) followed by 5x thin coats of colour.
Both cans were empty at the end of the day :p
Slow and steady ;)

thanks for that it sounds very promising! my only concern is my colour is a metallicy blue. So the finish comes up looking stock i.e no runs? Are you confident this will last and not chip at all?

Mate, it looks great, reminds me of my first Verada...
I do not know if you are aware, the strips do come off fairly easily and the clips which will most likely break are cheap as from mitsubishi. Might save you some tape anyhow lol
either way looks good. Can't wait to see the wheels.

Yeah I want to paint the grey trims along the sides too.. But worried that just a high gloss enamel in a spray can wont be good enough... will be hard to wash when dirty or chip off easy or it wont be the same kind of gloss on the rest of the car... anyone got advice?

That sure looks like it's turned out alright!
I would've thought it would've been easy to pull them off the car before painting them??

in response to the metallic paint queries:
the paint will stick on well and look the shit IF you prime first wipe the plastic down with meths, dry thoroughly, then spray on the appropriate primer (i use powerplus plastic primer) and let it dry for 24hrs, then sand the primer very lightly, and begin to spray your chosen color on. obviously, dont try and make complete coverage in one go, just do very light coats (if in doubt, buy 3 or 4 cans, cos they run out quicK) after every coat, leave for 20 mins, then when you think the coverage and thickness is satisfactory, you will probably notice it is not as shiny as the metal paint on your car body. then you need the clear laquer stuff (clear top coat). spray this on using the same method, thick but not all in one go. leave to dry and everything should look good. :)

thanks for your input filfkode should be very handy. Today I popped into a autobarn to take a look at what they have. They did have spray on primers there but I don't know if they were specifically for plastics. I also looked at the cans of spray paint and although one of the lids looked similar to my car I'd really like to make sure it's exact. Is there anyway to match a mitsubishi colour code with the ones on the cans they wee possible the powerplus brand you mentioned
thanks again to Vaeril but if I could possibly bug you for brands of primer and paint that would be great.
I think I might try doing my mudflaps first so I don't make a total disaster of my car are the mudflaps on tj's easily removable?

you have to make sure you specifically get a plastic primer. the ones you would have been looking at would be for metal and wont work. my mate is a spray painter and we have talked about this alot. basically you will never ever match an existing colour perfectly. especially just of the lid of a can. even if you get the same colour coded straight from mitsubishi it wont be a perfect match. you should be able to get pretty close but as the metallic paint on your car is a complex mixture i wouldnt even try to can match it. you may end up with a very ugly looking car with stripes on it that a re just a shade or two out but looks far worse than if it was completely wrong. id be saving up a little bit of money. shouldnt be much, and take it to a spray painter. most good spray painters dont even use any codes or factory paints. they start with a base and mix it up to match. you would be amazed how many different colours go just into a white let alone a mettalic aqua blue!

hmm thanks magwgn go and dash my hopes! :P
I can't for the life of me find a good quote though they are all upwards of $600 and a $10 spray can is sooo tempting :)
your points are very true though and I know I am kidding myself thinking I can match what they could do but I just want something better than the big grey strips

yeah i know a lot of places can do this but like i said it will never be just right. they will reference the factrory colour code and mix it up to match that. my point was that there are so many different factors that can effect the actual colour on your car its impossible to recreate it perfectly. thats why a good spray painter will mix up test batches and keep adjusting it until its as close to perfect as they can get. might need 5ml of yellow and 10 more mls of black to get the right red for your car. however i understand the difference between a dollar amount with one zero behind it and one with two. in this case id be contacting mm with your code and see if they can get touch up packs direct from the original supplier (as apposed to maybe doing the same thing the guy at autobarn does). this would probably be your best chance of getting a very close colour match.

I know wat you mean magwgn as I work in paint myself. I used a touch up can from autobarn and it was damn near perfect. Only prob is with metallics they are not gloss and you need a clear coat.

thanks for the input guys. I had a brief look at repco yesterday and they had a spray on primer for plastics which sounds like it should do the job. They didn't have a can with the right colour though but did mention they could mix it up, this would be based of my 2 letter paint code wouldn't it?. However I don't know how much they would charge for this and how long it would take. I'm only going to start on the mudflaps as they should be removable and not to easy to notice if I botch it up. About how much primer and paint do you think I would need for this. If they mix the paint up I don't know if I'm better off ordering a whole lot. One final thing am I best of just dealing with autobarn/repco of do those dulux paint joints scattered around the place deal in this stuff as well.
