View Full Version : Rough Idle.
I need help with my wife's TM. It's auto, the damn thing won't idle,to stop at lights the left foot is hard on the brake while the right foot on the gas to keep it going. I have tried another carby,it was the same. I have adjusted, screwed, turned everthing,STILL no go.The book talks about a damper clutch in the torque convertor. Does anyone know what it is and would this cause my problem. (in park the car jumps a bit, like it is in gear) Any help would be appreciated. Wes.

Hi, I have a manual TM and I was having a similar problem, whenever my foot was off the accelerator and car stationary or with my foot on the clutch (like changing gears on roundabouts) the car would stall, I too had the carby rebuilt, which made the car run better but still didnt solve my problem.
After becoming frustrated I started looking at the vacuum system. I found when I disconnected the vacuum hose from the idle cut switch (mounted on the firewall just behind the carby it has only one vacuum hose going onto it.) The car idled fine and I have had no trouble since.
Of course not being content with solving my problem I have done some further research on the subject. I believe I know the cause of the problem if you want I can explain in more detail.
By the way what I have just said is only applicable if you have the unleaded petrol version. Please try disconnecting and plugging that hose and let me know how you go.
The other problem you referred to about the trans would cause the car to stall only when its in gear.
Hope this helps

i had a prob in my TP where it idled like shit.
Turned out it was a 3" split in the hose between the airbox and the throttle body.
don't know if that helps u being a carby and all.

i had heaps of idle problems back when i first got my TP, turned out it was a screwed carby though - $120 later it's fine but needs a hell of a tune up (my car eats fuel like crazy, and its not an auto either)
its fun driving through town when you can't take your right foot off the throttle because the car will stall....
have you checked your fuel system out? blocked jets can cause idle problems (thats what mine started with, then we found out the carby was totally ****ed)

Yeh thanks for your reply,we have had 8 carbs on this thing one being a weber, and it still done it, thats why we are leaning towards the damper clutch in the convertor. I don't know how it works, the books says that when u stop (say at lights)the auto sits in second gear to stop creeping and to cut down vibration, when this happens the damper clutch makes the converter slip. So we are thinking that if it is not working properly then the converter would be engaged then release, engage, release and so on trying to move the car. (I could have this all wrong ) but like u said outside the carby and air leaks i don't have much more to try.
THANKS GUYS.

Well in that case, The trans is definately your only other option.
What did u do with the weber? and what sort was it.
My mates dad had a tn auto, and they had the problem with the trans you are talking bout. Sounds like you're on the right track looking at the trans.
Good luck

Hi guy's this is my first post here and i'm having exactly the trouble described here with the idle. My magna is an Auto unleaded carby version and i had a look so i could disconnect the vacuum hose as described except mine seems to have 2 Vacuum hoses going to the firewall from Carby  i'm not sure which one to disconnect, can anyone help?

may I ask how a 2003 post came up in 2007
think the TM might have been sold by now
Hey Magna Buff,
i found this post whilst searching your Forum I have a TM Magna with the same problem described here and that was my first ever post here so i think your  comment is a bit unfair and i also don't care if the one from that post is sold or not just asking for help and advice thats all if you read my post properly. not really a good first impression for a newbie on your forum.

TM Exec 87 sorry ..that unfair post deleted
I and a few others will be able to help you with your problem
here is some more helpfull information
the diagramme is of the emissions if you use a highlighter you can follow where every vaccume line goes
rough idle is a vaccume problem anywhere in the lines can be a leak
both have to be connected one has to go to the carby vaccume system
the other to the charcole canister
my guess is the charcole canister is filled up and need replacing
the next is there are two valves on the fire wall
best solution is to take the car to a place that has a emmisions gas analiser to adust the carby ...old carbys can be adjusted but take time
link to more carby information

... I have a similar (though not as severe) issue with my TP EFI.
Starts fine, idles fine, runs fine, until I roll up to a stop sign or a red light. Revs drop right off & staggers. About half the time it stalls, if not, it will come back to a rough idle.
I wonder if the trans is staying "in gear" too long.
Any suggestions out there?

Whats it idle on?
I know my 2ng gen had crap idle but thats because it the idle was set to low, the car was struggling to stay on and it was causing the crap idle at the lights, adjusted it higher and it now has smoother idle and the cars not feeling like its gonna break down at the lights.
Not sure about the first gens, but theres a screw to do this on the 2ng gens which is easy.
Also check your ISC, turn the aircon on and see if the idle goes up, good test to make sure its working fine still.
There are also some other issues, TPS gets a build up of gunk on it, throttle control may be loose, etc

Fixed mine with a screw driver, setting the idle slighly higher. Was on something stupid so no wonder why my car had crap idle.
Dont worry this is across the range from 1st gens to 2nds to 3rds, even veradas.
Its the one thing that makes mitsubishi suck
