Hey guys,

I had my front brake pads changed 2 weeks ago and put in Bendix Advance and had my disc machined as well , but the thing is that the car does not stop any better than before. In fact i find it to stop less well than before.

I haven't changed my rear pads yet. My mechanic told me that my rear are the cheap ones but they are ok at the moment.

Is it bad to change only the front pads and then change the rear ones later on.

Also i'm surprised by how dark my front wheels become after i put in Bendix Advance.

Could anyone help me on this please.

cheers

I recall my manual saying that new brakes take about 200km to bed in properly so should refrain from hard stopping within that time. Whilst bedding in is in progress, I presume there would be some reduction in braking performance(?).

It's not a bad thing changing front brakes without changing the rear ones & it's commonly done.

I've driven more than 500kms since i had them changed so i doubt that they still need time....

Hi...

I just put in the same pads today... Ill see how they go. The ones i had in before were crap and only lasted nearly 4 months. A bit off it chipped off which was alarming.. Ive been told that these pads dont fade

hey dude, unless your old pads were really worn and you had really poor braking, you wouldn't normally be able to tell the difference with new ones on. i had the same experience. to be honest, the older magnas (not sure abt TJ onwards cos i drive a TH) have shocking braking capabilities to the point of being dangerous, considering its size, weight and engine power.

and you might want to flush your brake fluid system cos if you have bubbles in the system they might hamper braking performance substantially.

There is a correct bedding in procedure for bendix advance brake pads soon as there fitted, very first time it moves.
Speed up to 60 k then moderately come to a complete stop, then back up to 60k for 200 metres to allow cooling then brake as before , this process is to be done 12 -15 times.
The rreason for this is to slowly heat the pads which allows the pad compund to burn off at a set rate thus conditioning the pad for optimum effeceincy.

I have conditioned the pads on myTH, advance pads with fr slotted rotors and it pulls up OK with no fade.

I did the same thing as u Phil.... Seewhat happens then in the next few hundred k's... I think to really get better stopping power you'd have to go DBA cross drilled or something

Well I bought Ferodo pads, and will have them changed as soon as my old ones are about 5000 k's from having no braking effect..
I will get front and rear done at the same time..

hmm, i have bendix advance pads too. I bedded them in following the procedures as phil said....

i think they're ok. the first few kms are really dusty, but they're not too bad now. bendix have a reputation to get dusty.

i've found my braking power to be better than teh old pads (bendix basic)...pedal feels nicer and stops better.

rotors are most likely warped to all buggery tho, coz they squeal like crazy lol

dust is cool, coz when u wash ur wheels (hubcaps) it gives u a good feeling of accomplishment that you've done a good job of cleaning!

i think its sleepy time  :doubt:

Or if u get white rims u want the brakes which produce as little dust as humanly possible or after 50m after a good wash the wheels get dirty and need another clean. lol

Though the stock pads seem to be not producing huge amounts of dust after 2 weeks the wheels are no longer white but almost grey, this only happens when parents take the car on the day that its meant to be washed on.

So which pads have almost no dust that will go into TF magna.

shouldn't u be sleeping!

i hate u and ur cheap/free frequent car washes :P

brake dust is cool, gives ur rims a 'smoked, shadow' tint to it when ur in the mood, and when u want white, just wash it off! its like god's gift to ultimate wheel cusotmisation, and doesnt' cost anything!!

Gotta love the integrity and optimism of poor uni students... of which I am one :D

Mods:
under-carriage lighting: glow sticks
lowered about 3 inches: angle grinder
audio: home entertainment system and speakers
18 inch rims: just an illusion, actually silver spray paint

lol

also dont forget glow stick under the dash..

i have DBA slotted rotors in the front with feroda pads. Had bendix before that. they all suck. magna brakes are woeful, atrocious, mitsu should be ASHAMED! i have just given up trying to get my car to a respectable level of braking performance

Fit ralliart front brakes and if you can afford it do the rears as well. It'll stop heaps better. :D

yeh no kidding. my point is i shouldnt HAVE to fork out all that much cash just to get a family car stopping reasonably well. Never have i driven a car with stock brakes as bad as magnas.

If my next car is a magna i will be looking at ralliarts only and one of the reasons for that is the brakes.

Have got Bendix ultimate pads being the top of the line in the Bendix range. Just replaces all 4 discs with standard DBA and Bendix ultimate pads. The dust is unbelievable if you push em hard but as tim e said, the standard setup is woeful to the point of dangerous but just stick some Ultimates in and most people will be totally satisfied.

They chew discs quiker but you still get 80,000 k's out of the discs which isnt bad. They are so cheap these days anyway.

Cost me about $450 for 4 discs and pads. Installed myself. So easy to do.

You reckon magnas are bad, drive a commodore any model up to VT and see what crap brakes are like, oh and i forgot any of the EA-AU series 2 falcons crap crap crap

Good call Jason. I can remember driving a VS Acclaim down the fwy at 170k's and hit the brakes. After literally 2 seconds It did absolutely NOTHING and i mean nothing. I couldnt feel anything at all with my foot to the floor. Had to use gears to slow me down. And this was a well maintained car.
So yeah, Magna's arn't the worse but not far from it.

Bought a KE in Dec 96 when they first came out. The brakes were great on it when new but they didnt last long. I think it was the 20,000 k service and mitsub replaced all pads and rear discs. Since then they were ****, so i'm guessing they realised that good pads were going to cost them to much in warranty claims so they put the cheapo ones in which dont eat discs but also dont stop you.

Yeah the standard magna rotors are known to go all wobbly after a few thousand kms, the ralliart rotors are of a better quality but even they get all shuddery after a few hard stops but i guess the car makers are making a vehicle to a cost that the market will pay and for the majority of people the standard brakes are fine.

The BA falcon had front rotors problems too until they did a fix on them in 2004.
My dad has a XR6T with the premium brake package and thats been through a set of front rotors in only 35000kms!
