Hi All,

After getting all your questions floodding in about the EGR system I thought id fill you in on the basics, im going to write up a tech article (along with all the others i have half done) next week after i finish uni FOR EVER lol

Anyway, The EGR system is basically a system whereby exhaust gasses are re routed back into the intake of the car to lower cylinder temperatures. Now your thinking why the hell would you want to run hot filthy oxygen robbing exhaust back into the combustion process? The answer is simple, emissions...

The EGR system is designed to reduce the amount of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) created by the engine during operating periods that usually result in high combustion temperatures. NOx is formed in high concentrations whever combustion temperatures exceed 1300 degrees celcius.

The EGR system reduces NOx production by recirculating small amount of exhaust gases into the intake manifold where it mixes with the air / fuel charge. By diluting the air / fuel mixture peak combustion temperatures and pressures are reduced resulting in overall reduction of NOx output.

High EGR Flow: during cruising and mis range acceleration when combustion temperatures are typically very high.

Low EGR Flow: during low speed and light load conditions

No EGR Flow: engine warm up, idle and wide open throttle

Im pretty sure this feature is only specific to the TJ's but if anyone can confirm or disprove this that would be great, none of my previous magna's had this feature just the VRX.

I will post exactly how to disconnect it shortly, but here are some pic in the mean time.

Some KS Verada wagons were fitted with EGR, the Touring. Apparently these were European export spec Sigma Tourings that for some reason were released to the Australian market. I don't recall anyother model being fitted with EGR.

I'd like to point out what should be obvious, the fact that interfering with any EGR equipment is illegal and defectable...

Not only that, but removing the egr changes the engine's efficiency where it's used, hence the ignition timing would be non-ideal if EGR was removed.

Cheers,

Dave

hang on,NOX is what people inject into there engines for more power?? So if you removed the EGR then you would raise the NOX and increase the internal heat of the engine ??
Since you have Increased the NOX , Does that give you more power ??

EGR was introduced with the TH model. My 99 sports had it until i got rid of it.

NOx is a generic term for nitrogen oxides, which are one nitrogen molecule and some number of oxygen molecules.

Nitrous Oxide, or N2O on the other hand is used to improve performance and is two nitrogen, one oxygen.

Back when I had a Volvo 244, we had the EGR removed from it by our mechanic. He said it was perfectly legal, because it was more than 10 years old

It didnt give us more power, but it did run better afterwards

sound like you're getting NOS and NOX mixed up mate..... stop watching so much 2fast 2ridiculous!! lol

And to that point NOS is brand that sells nitrous oxide (n2o) lol

Not true. It is illegal to interfere with any emission control gear, period.

So what emission controls did they have before TH, i'm suprised they did not have EGR valves

They didnt require it to meet ADR's before then. The new 3.8 WONT have EGR either because its a very efficent engine.

Shows our audi A3 2.0 FSI (direct injection) motor up, it has An EGR valve, 4 02 sensors (tho audi call 2 of them 'air quality sensors') 3 cats, (yes 3 cats). what does the new engine comply with, euro4 or does it already comply with euro5

Couldnt tell you cos i dont know. I also have a mazda SP23 and that has 2 oxy sensors and 2 cat convertors (apparently to meet LEV laws in america)

Hmmm. Sounds like my mechanic was a bit dodgy then......expecially considering it was serviced at Scureria Veloce at Hornsby......
