I hope this isn't to much of a stupid question :) but I'm looking at getting a K&N Pod filter and I was wondering whether they really do increase fuel economy. Someone told me the opposite and stated that due to the increased air flow the engine burns more fuel.

I thought that maybe the increased air flow allowed the engine to produce the same speeds at a lower RPM therefore improving fuel economy. Can anyone clarify whether pods decrease fuel economy or improve it ie. from personal experience.

Thanks

I've got a panel and Lukey muffler and noticed no change in economy. If you get the pod, make sure it's the right pod, (KN-MAF), and you'll need some decent cold air induction or you'll be sucking from a warm engine bay.

More air = more fuel to keep the air / fuel ratio optimal. If you got slightly more power out of it you would reach your target speed quicker meaning it's making more effort and you'd need slightly less open throttle so it would probably mean economy is probably unaffected.

Would it be enough to the leave the front part of the current induction system for the air intake as in some of the pics located on the assiemagna site (see below)? Also, do you still get the nice sound with the panel filter?

I personally wouldn't as it's not fully shielded from the engine bay. You could probably get away with it but you'll be sucking hot air while it's idle. Pod and CAI go hand in hand due to the nature of the pod. CAI needs to be done correctly to see eny gains from it.

I don't think the panel has a whistling noise like what some pods have. Doesn't bother me that I don't have it.
