I want some cheap doof and cant be bothered with a box or anything. What size sub would fit in the parcel shelf in the space provided.

I know you will all want to winge about this.....but i dont care :P

you are probably better off to buy a free air subwoofer like a pioneer, they are usually cheap, but you will need a small amp to run any sub.. Free air subs can be mounted just about anywhere, so just behind the back seat on a piece of mdf for a spacer would be fine.

8" But u will need a hacksaw to get through the parcel shelf. I think its a good idea if you dont wanna let go of boot space. U need to mount onto mdf rings as well.

Digital Designs make some menacing 8" subs

Yeah I have an amp. So you cant just leave the carpet stuff sitting on top?

I thought it was illegal to have subs in your rear shelf ? but i cant talk. I had 2 10" subs in the rear shelf of my commie :D

a Sub needs an enclosure, you can't have a naked speaker rolling around in your boot..

putting an 8 incher into that space provided would not be that hard to do, but the results would be less impressive then a Stand alone Subwoofer in an enclosure..

its illegal to cut/modify the rear shelf as far as i know.. go free behind seat.. :)

Many subs wont work well free air. You can also look into Aperiodic Mats which replicate an enclosure without the enclosure.
You just place these over the top of the sub to provide the natural damping of a box.
Response will be very accurate but at the expense of some low end excursion.

Post up specs of any subs u find and work from there.

Its not illegal as long as you dont cut sheet metal. Pioneer subs come with a box and 12inch woofer for $150, same with JBL for $229.. how much cheaper do you want?

Correct it is only Illegal to Cut Metal from the Parcel shelf as it is Structural metal..part of the safety cage.

TE sedans have a hole there just covered buy the Factory parcel shelf and a Screw in Plug for the hole..

The rear shelf already has a hole in it made for a sub i am pretty sure.

Cheaper that that :D Plus its also the convenience factor. I already have a gas tank in my boot.

Hmm how much room have u got there... Im only familiar with TF's they have the space there but its all sheet metal from memory.

For an 8" on a budget... Even look at Jaycar Venoms. But dont expect any miracles. You get what you pay for. Still good bang for buck and better that over a pair of 6x9's on their lonesome.

Good stuff. $40 for a jaycar 8" venom sub, just what I was looking for. Thanks.

I have got a 4 channel amp currently running 6"'s and 6x9's. How do you reckon i should hook the sub up to get the best sound and power?

you could get the 2-way comp pioneer 6 *9's as they will put out nearly as much bass as a 8" sub but you will be paying a lot more than $150 id say. I have the 4-ways and i think they retail for about $450 now

Run the fronts off 1 and 2 and bridge 3 and 4 to run the sub. Should be plenty of power. Then just run the Rears off the headunit. Preferably put together some resistors to high pass the 6x9's.

Those Venoms can take a bit of a beating iirc.

But once again, dont expect miracles. Im pretty sure these arent designed to run free air. So bass will be lacking. Still, should be better than just 6x9's.
Be wary of cancellation with ur rears as well if you dont high pass them.

Get 2 eight inch or 10 incher's, but mount them.
You can get mdf mounters, so they still sit ontop of your old 6*9 port holes. decent bass, decent sound for cheep.

I used to run 8 inch splits in my old HSV but im sure sub's would be just as good. I've heard them before, didnt do too bad, if you dont mind seeing some subs in the rear vision mirror.
Ill post a pic of what it'll somewhat look like, my old hsv..
You get the idea tho..

I know I know, wanker playboy seat covers.. It was to over the mint condition SS seats installed from alcohol and cum stains.

Dare i say your two subs kinda has a boobs theme with the playboy covers on. hahaha, being pink and all.

Where abouts can i get high pass resistors for my 6*9's tim?

Sorry for hijacking btw.

U can make em... :) Depending on what frequency u want... Jaycar has kits to make any cutoff and slope. But simple caps with a shallow slope are easy.

They are just capacitors. Connect them in series with either of the speaker wires to attenuate low frequencies at 6db/oct (shallow slope) The value of the cap is dependant on what cut off freq u need and the speakers impedance. With a 6db slope, ul need a fairly high cut off for good results. 150 hz - 300 hz is good for 6x9's.

Can get them from any electronics place, Jaycar tandy etc...

They have charts there which will help u find what u need. Assume the inpedance is 4 ohm (although this will change with varying impedance curves)
eg:
50v 100uF should be fine off the headunit.
otherwise
200uF = 200hz
150uF = 260hz
100uF = 400hz

Couple of bucks

Peace

Tim
