I am hoping someone can help me. I have an 88 TN carby magna and there is a problem when idling. After driving for a while and when i stop at a set of lights or something my magna idles really rough. It doesnt do it when i first start the car. I have been told that it is common for the automatic choke to stuff up so i thought it could be that is not properly disengaging or something. Does anyone have any ideas.

i agree.

problems i see wrong with the stock magna carb:
1. vacuum secondaries can seize shut (have seen 4 carbs with secondaries seized shut now)
2. the use of 4 floats so fuel dosen't run out wen cornering hard (expensive)
3. coolant runs through the carb aswell (so weneva u wanna do something to the carb, u also have to replace the coolent)

please add your list

You might want to check your air flow. If air intake is restricted, it'll run fine on an open choke but cough or run rough when its closed. Otherwise, the boys above seem to have good advice. I always like to start by making sure plenty of air and the right ammount of clean fuel is getting to the carby before tinkering with the thing.

LLama, what does your car idle at when warmed up? could it be possible that your carby just needs a quick tune? If you have a dirty filter would it be possible that your idle jet has become clogged, causing your car to run rough at idle when off choke? im just playing with a few ideas here.

heh, i can add to that list

4. Individual parts are expensive (a certain mechanic i know wanted $150 for a new secondary diapram, fortunately i was able to source one for $50)
5. The emission control system is too complicated for its own good. The vaccum lines also deteriorate too easily knocking out half the system.

and ill add +1 to your secondarys seized list TM-SE-RED ;)

if youve ever had a magna carby in top condition tho, it does do pretty well. as to why they made it vacuum, its the same as asking why they made the heavy thing fwd.

Odd. It seems I'm one of a very few, with a non-seized carby. The only problem I had was a blocked catalyic converter preventing the car running.
