try driving it gently, use only as much right foot as you need. Try less foot, let the torque of the engine do it's thing.
You should get more out of a tank....
I have a 3.0L 3rd gen and I get almost 900kms out of it on the highway if I drive it gently....

could be a number of things, try a compression test and check your ignition timing...my sisters ks v6 auto still gets 600km normal driving....i have a leak in my inlet manifold and i get 400km (did some highway driving and killed my economy, high rpm).
Could be leak, blocked cat, faulty sensors, clogged fuel filter, a number of electrical signals (injectors etc)....
try the compression test it'll be your best bet to find if its pre-combustion

come here, lets have a cry together :( got probs like this of my own

Holy crap, i have been buggerising around with my '91 KR Verada for about 3 years now and trying to do as much DIY as possible and have only just found this forum.
Anyway as to mileage, this is one major issue I have had with this car since I bought it. A month or two ago this car developed a leak in the intake manifold gasket and I decided to tackle that myself. So far so good.
After that I thought the Verada would be back to normal, but alas far from it. When it is cold it runs pretty good, but becomes powerless when it gets to normal running temperature. I have been checking TPS, timing, etc and that has not made any difference. It was continuing to loose coolant until I spotted a small leak on a hose connection that was dripped onto the transmission cover and evaporating before I could see it. Easily fixed with a turn of a screwdriver.
At the moment I am getting around 7 km's to the litre. Very crap k's and with the price of petrol these days hard on the wallet. However I do think I have the answer to my problem which could be also the answer to yours.
Searching the internet for info I cam across something I hadnt known. It was to do with antifreeze affecting the O2 sensors. As the O2 sensor only starts to function in the system loop when it gets to around 300 degrees C I figure a stuffed O2 sensor is causing my problems. (Hesitation with hard acceleration). I am also thinking about replacing the fuel pressure regulator too.
Cheers
