Hiho,

Picked up a set of JL VR600CSi splits :D - now to install.

Ripped apart the door + dash, the pipe between door & dash looks too full of elec. window + factory split speaker wiring to run new wiring, so I am thinking of just using the existing wiring - already 2 pair running to the factory splits.

Problem - where the heck do these 2pair of speaker wire finish up in the dash? - there must be a factory crossover of some sort between the door & headunit - need to find where these wires are so I can insert the JL crossover.

Anybody found these before?
I think there are somewhere around the spot indicated below, but can't be sure - clues??

I just fitted new stinger speaker cable through the factory rubber pipe yesterday. Its fiddly, but not that hard. Took me about 10minutes each door. I pulled the rubber out of the door both ends, got it as straight as I could, then taped my speaker cable to a straightened coathanger and fed it through. Just dont poke a hole in the rubber.
Cheers

yep, thats the way to do it.

I wouldn't bother with using existing wires. Fiddly, and when you want to put ur old speakers back in, you'll have to find that plug again. I have no idea where the stock crossovers are.

i tried, but there is no way extra wiring is getting poked through that hole!! reading through old forum posts, it seems people with sports/vrx/verada that have electric windows, powermirrors etc cable have trouble doing this. There was an old post from someone that took their door off to do it.

So, factory cabling it is. To answer the original question - factory split systems don't have a crossover, the tweeter is just wired in parallel off the woofer.
Rip out factory speakers, make MDF spacer (12mm), replace factory tweeters, install new woofer & crossover (in door, against manufacturer recommendations - so wrapped in foam/plastic) .
Posts from our experts have suggested that the factory wiring should be good for 40WRMS - so that should do me for now until I amp it up too much.

JLs now in & sounding sweet. Thanks for the tips over the last couple of weeks. Happy snaps of install attached. cheers.

Is that all people mean by making an MDF spacer?
I got the impression that "MDF Spacer" meant replacing that whole white plastic mount with MDF...???
If so, that makes my job a heck of a lot easier!!!
Whats everyone else done?

Oh I have a TH Sports with electric windows and mirrors, and I got 16guage Stinger cables through...??

I think i did it the quick'n'dirty way - as someone previously pointed out, the white plastic thing is not quite flat which is not ideal. Replacing the whole thing is probably the correct thing to do, but then there is the problem of aiming it at the stock speaker cover - the white thing holds it on a ~20degree angle.

Just a quick thought.

Is there a reason that you can't put the MDF spacer onto the door itself, then the plastic thing onto the spacer? That way you would still keep the ~20 degree angle...???

even better has anyone got some pics of their mdf baffles that they can post up?

You cant mount the plastic onto the mdf, kinda defeats the purpose, and the plastic mould is huge...

Best thing to do would be to replace the whole plastic thing with an mdf cutout, ensure it is totally sealed and give as much angle as possible for the driver.

If you mount a ring you NEED to cut out some of the plastic so it sits flush, I used a bench drill to hack away at it, If you leave a big hole there it defeats the purpose and will cause cancellation.

I have temporarily mounted my mdf ring onto the plastic, but plan to do it properly when I get some time.

The VR Commodore I was working on Yesturday had JL audio Splits and had them firing straight at the legs of My friend, so he asked me if it was possible to mount them better, so I Altered his factory door Pods to hold his New Alpine Type S speakers on about a 30 Degree angle ( Plastic and an Angle grinder do wonders) and the end result was mind blowing compared to the install he had before..

Angling the woofer to fire through the Speaker grill will result in better clarity and will sound cleaner, but is a pain to do, designing an MDF spacer to work like that would be a pain.

I just Bolted my Woofer Directly to the White plastic and have no quibbles with it.. Quick , Easy and gets reasonable results..

Just a word of Warning... Commodore Fronts are 6 inch, trying to shoe horn in 6.5 inches takes some creative thinking.

some of you may remember I had a similar problem with the MDF spacers when trying to install my jaycar splits. Anyway, I took tim's advice and replaced the whole plastic thing with a MDF cut out. Got some pics here if anyone is interested
