View Full Version : finsihed sub box pics
Yer, finally got the ****s with it, and finished it up quickly the other day :) Ive got the other side still in fiberglassng phase.. but may finish it off in a month or so.
Excuse the mess :P but the sides are goingto get dont in black fluff, and the base of the boot, re-lined with black vinyl just to clean things up a little. and when the sub costs twice as much as the amp, one thinks it will be time for an amp upgrade soon :D

OOhh I see a Vibe sub.. Damn thats looking sweet,
Is the enclosure big enough for it ??? or Are you going for Punch rather then rattle ??
ikinda got lucky and the vol of the box is bout 30-35 liters, and the sub wanted 38 :D its actually quite big, cause it makes use of every part of the boot corner (i took fiberglass mould of the back pocket).

If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost for materials for the fiberglass enclosure, i'm planning on going skiing and can't afford to have my ski hole blocked by the sub, yet, it'll be a nightmare driving 4 hrs a trip without a sub.

Oh i forgot, how does it sound with the sub to the side? Because of no rear loading and it's also pointed to the side of the boot. Give it a rating out of 10, as opposed to read loading it!
Thanks Dee
this is going to be an estimated cost (cause i have used materials on 2 of these subboxes)
masking tape =$5
resin + hardener ~3L = $40
fiberglass matting = $15
primer/paints/sandpaper = $15
fiberglass filler = $30 (subsitute this with 1sqmter of fiberglass cloth instead... lesson learnt :P)
so if i had to do this again, the costs would be around $70
edit* its a bit hard to determin sound wise, im not a big sound junkie, but i went from a budget 12" sub in a kick ass solid ported box, (amp fully loaded), and that had a lot of heavy bass. ive only run this in the car for about 20mins all up (and amp runnig at below half), but seems to have a shorter, but sharper and cleaner punch (rofl does this make sense). I dont get any tinny boot rattle like before, but i get back windscreen, mirrors, all glass rattles:) but this again is only running at minimum amp power. Out of 10, im realy not sure.. its a different doof to what i had before, maybe a 6/10 (10 being the best)... but that'll change soon.

Nicely done dee, can't wait to see it in person and have a listen.

Dee, once you made the box, how is it mounted to that spot?
Thank you!
mine isnt mounted to the flloor (a combination of heavy sub weight, and the curves and conformity of the box with all sides makes it impossible to move - except when you manually tilt it and pull it out of place)...
there is no problem in mounting it to the wood in those side pockets, and would take 2 seconds if you wanted to be super safe.

Ahh the ol hide-in-the-corner trick. I bet you'll make a great father :D
Looks good man!
How much is the sub and enclosure?
Doesnt it weigh that side of the car down at all?
I keep mine in the centre so I dont throw the centrifugal force of the car out.
Sounds silly. Does it make sence?

Then why don't you sit in the centre while driving just to keep it equal?
Hahaha, i'm just messing mate

Hey dee, i noticed your box is actually infront of the carpeting, does that mean you didn't take the carpet off and just masking taped it?
I'm just gonna copy whatever you did, cos i have no time to experiment...
Snow! oh yeah!!!
Thanks heaps

I looked at Dee's sub box and the amount of ideas that are in my head for my next boot install are piling up.
I did a fair bit of research on it ( which was meant to be spent on studying ) got a couple of links to some very good fibreglassing pages. Where i got even more ideas, some of the other fibreglassing i saw was very very impressive from some of those sites.
There is also a very good site that has prob the best DIY tutorial around that u dont have to pay for and the link to it is.
http://web.njit.edu/~cas1383/proj/main/
And yes you are meant to put masking tape over the carpet and then apply the fibreglass to it, also i saw that some ppl had put plastic rubbish bags as well and some had used foil to make a perfect seal.

That website is increadible, it makes me wanna take apart my boot and re-do the whole thing in glass. mmm.
Even the computer is a good idea, i have a ipod, but a cheap computer with a cheap screan, playing both dvd's and cd's mp3's, what more could you ask for. awsome

hehe yeah that site has made me want to do my whole boot, rear parcel shelf and maybe even dash.
Lucky enough my dads friend is a fibreglasser so i will get some very good tips from them maybe even the things i need very cheap.
And hopefully i will have fibreglassed my whole boot during the holidays.
Tom
rofl.. you guys areall thinking what i thought a short time ago, and this particlar sub.. is actually a part of the entire boot design im doing... *spooky music*..but yer...i hurt my back trying to sit in theboot and line the entire boot in masking tape that was like 3cm thick :(
but basically.. you can use anythhhhhhhhhhhhhing you want to line your boot, but use common sense.. like.. cling wrap and general plastics will melt..! the resin will seep throuh such stuff, so stick to al foil, or justmaskingtape... whatever you use, YOU MUST USE A LUBE ;) (hehhe), but yer, FG shops have mold-release wax/glues, or use a good ol can of wd-40, and be generous :) else youwont be able to get it off the tape/foil.
"Hey dee, i noticed your box is actually infront of the carpeting, does that mean you didn't take the carpet off and just masking taped it?

yep.. in front. although.. be cautious with the boot hinges!! cause yer :( but if your carpetting, a little contact doesnt matter :D
, rear parcel shelf and maybe even dash.
Guess who started their custom dash today ;) well console first (gonna have a little tv screen built in front of the cig/bin area), and get some curves to the console :D shall be fun :S

sweet will have to see the progress, something id love to do but too scared of dodgy thieves stealing it and leaving me with an empty dash :(
good to see you getting into the fibre glassing though, youll be a master soon

hehe, i was talking to colgate, and thought...shouldn't u make some sort of a hinged door, or sliding door to cover your screen from thieves when u're not in the car?
anyhows, lookin' good!!....feel like spanking something...yeh:doubt:

Damnit i cant wait for exams to finish so i can start work on fibreglassing the entire car lol
Then to get some more money for a better system then what i have now.
ooooh writing this has given me another idea  maybe make a whole new dash hmmmmmmmm sooo many ideas. Now i just need the time and money.
Tom
hehe budget well.. its cheaper to build it yourself, but the costs of good resin doesnt come cheap :)

kool thks for the link too bad they arent in VIC.
Though i did a search for a fibreglass supplier here in vic and found one thats close by.
Also what are the good resins if u happen to know and which ones did you use.
any idea if its worth using carbon fibre? Cost?
only answer them if u know, cause ive got a friend who used to make fibreglass boats. But i will only see him after my exams.
Tom
yer a polyester resin is what i used (had a chat to the bloke at the store to see what was best for a sub box), and there were two types of polyester resins, and he gave me the cheaper one (about $26 for 2L).
carbon fiber will cost your a lot lot more, same with kevlar... and for a boot install... lol its really not appropriate. You need fiberglass matt to build up strength and thickness, and fiberglass cloth on outer layers (i didnt do this, but ive since been told :P).
carbon fiber would look pretty, for for a first project that was often seen in the car but if your inexpereinecd it would come out looking crap.. hehe.
