I have a '91 TP (efi) which has just undergone an engine rebuild (head and timing chain). I'd like to strobe the timing after disabling automatic advance. I don't have a workshop manual for the TP and have been relying instead on a Gregory's TR/TS manual. However it's clear that changes were made in the timing check connector between the older and newer models.

So my question is how is automatic advance disabled?

I have a HAYNES manual for TP and if your question is how to disable it then this is what my book instructs you to do.

On fuel injected models, locate the engine service connector at the ignition coil and remove the plastic cap. Using a jumper wire, connect terminals 2 ( red/white wire) and 4 ( black wire) together. This will prevent the computer from attempting to advance the timing during adjustment.

Make sure the timing light wires are routed away from the drivebelts and fan, then start the engine.

Dunno if that helps but hope so.

Thanks for your help Itsubish. I'll follow that lead.

yep no probs I trailled it the other day and if the timing is set by manufacturer at 13 degrees, like mine, then u need to set ur timing at about 8 degrees while the lead is on, because when you remove the lead the timing advances about 5 degrees. Any hoo give it a go and see how ya go.

goodluck.

All the Magnas I have done the timing on have had the base set at 5 degrees and then when the computer is allowed to advance it it bumps upto 13 as it is meant to. The label on the bonnet will tell you what the timing should be.
