I'm scared of those competitions... They're gonna make me feel bad about my car so it's like. I drive there all happy and pumping it up then once i get judged and they tell me what can be better i feel really bad and end up spending heaps to fix it. And i'll go home all sad and depressed...

Its not like that at all, all the guys there are really helpful. It's a good chance to have a listen to some awesome systems. Judges are constructive in their criticism. And no one else even sees ur score. Judges give you one on ones after.

Go down and give it a try even if u go down just to check out some ppls systems and dont compete

How is the SQ measured? Is it measurable by instruments somehow, or purely a subjective judgement by folks with good ears? Do they give you a numerical score, or just a description of how good/bad it is?

Measured by two audiophile judges. Using only their eyes and ears. (In Asia they do it blindfolded to ensure no bias)

My last scoresheet for Street class (Show class has all these and more categories for the show aspects)

Accuracy and clarity
11/15 Sub bass
13/15 Mid Bass
13/15 Mid Range
12/15 Highs
12/15 Overall Linearity
Dynamics
0 /-5 Soft Volume level Dynamics / Linearity
Soundstage
4 / 5 Stage Width
3 / 5 Stage Depth
3 / 5 Stage Height
3 / 5 Ambience
Stereo Image
10/10 Left & Right Channel Verfication
6 /10 System ability to accurately portray stereo imaging
5 /10 Stage positioning and placement sharp and focused
System noise
5 / 5 Engine off
5 / 5 Engine on

Yes it is subjective, but the judges are good at what they do and it is designed to ensure the best car wins on the day.

Judges are happy to give you a quick 5 minute rundown of what they thought, the more you quiz them the more they will tell you what areas you can improve on.

Peace

Tim

We should have Our Own AMC Sound off and SQ Comp.. Me and S_tim_ulate could judge..
He likes SQ and I like SPL.. I would be extremely fair.. and only give recommendations to those who have Kenwood gear...

just a warning.. If you have 6x9's installed in an SQ system... The judges tend to laugh....Thats why I do not like SQ Audiophiles.. They Bag out the Best Speaker to be invented for the Car Audio enthusiast on a Budget,,,The Humble 6x9...

YOu should be ashamed of yourself! Go back and redo your system! :P

Yeah, SQ is overrated :gtfo: :bowrofl:

I agree the humble 6*9 is the poor man's dream, you know not everyone is living it up, so it's the simplest and most cost effective speaker to replace without spending money on an amp. You must admit, 6" in the doors sound quite bad without an amp, all the weird distortion and crap gets through. the 6's are nothing compared to the 6*9 in a truely budgeted system. gotta love their cost effectiveness.

That said, if you have the dosh then they are absolute rubbish, but the point is for those without the dosh, the 6*9's are more useful than those 6" unamped.

But eveyone in here probably has the dosh so forget all about what i said and go get yourselfs some real power.

I have been to lazy to mount my fire extinguisher and i payed the price for it.. oh well you live and learn as it was the first time in a comp, still got judges choice :D . Amature street competition was hotly contested and was interesting to see what other peolpe put in their cars.

Anyone keen to go next month @ penrith ???

Good to see you got 3rd..

I don't like SQ comps.. I don't like SQ set ups... to me if you ain't got 6x9's then it ain't no good..
I like the good Old fashioned Sound systems, front Rears and Subs....none of this " Pseudo Surround " crap that people think you can achieve with just a set of splits and a Sub...I am not saying it isn't possible and I am sure there are some great sounding systems out there who have this kind of set up, it just seems that all the SQ heads can do is bag out the 6x9...

I actually have splits in the front, 6x9's in the back one 5 channel amp, and I borrowed a sub for the day but didn't spend any real time tuning it.

I am very happy with my results, system cost me around $3000 (have focal splits and 6x9's and orion amp with 4 guage wire) The guy that got first has spent $12,000 on his system.

I will add a 12" sub soon, just looking for one that sounds punchy at all levels.

wtf magnat?

Geeze man... get over it... :P

I have 6x9's I couldnt care less about them... Just a speaker...

I will happily plug them in and play them, I just dont compete with rear fill. Not like my whole point in life is to bag out a speaker.

Magnat have you EVER heard a competitive SQ setup? Not just a cheap system with the rears turned up. I seriously want you to have a listen to one then after that if you can say that you still don't enjoy SQ setups so be it...

mre2me well done.... Gotta go the safety stuff for easy points, bad luck but seems to be very competitive. What was ur breakdown like?
Is your front stage running active?

Peace

6x9's are just for fill, and thats all they are there for. ANY system would sound sh!t without rear fill. Only Bogans pump up the rears stuff the front and derive their listening pleasure that way.

Yeah first attempt and was none the wiser in regards to the mounting of extinguisher (My bad) and the Reomte being in reach, Who knew!! I left it in the centre console.

Not sure what " front stage running active"

Cheers

Nope- No time alignment allowed in amature street
The tweeters are in the covers that are at the top of the dash.. you know those two nipples on you dash .. lol

Thanks about the scores, will try better next time... May not be able to compete for a little while. Bone marrow test next month when the next comp is on nd then baby due the month after that.... You know what they say, Life Goes On...

In general its just a bit of fun... funny i didnt hand over alot of cash to get where I am. Just a good plan and excellent shop to help facilitate it.

Hows the tweeters sound from down low?

I agree, no system is complete without rears.... I am totally envious of your Score..
I don't crank my rears, they are their to fill in what the fronts are unable to reproduce due to a lack of cavity in the doors... thats all...

tweets sound good down low, no separation, also have ambient tweets in the delta panels playing 10 khz and up. But always looking to try new things. If I had time alignment I know my system would come alive even more...

Active front stage is when each component (sub/mid/tweet/ambient) has it's own channel and uses active crossovers instead of passive, just makes it easier to fiddle with slopes/points etc.

As a judge for CAASQ I am permitted to help you guys tune the system before the comps. If you like just head down here and I'll judge the car on the day and you can then work on fixing the things I pick up. :)

That way when the comp actually comes around you'll have the system sounding the best it can. :)

Sounds like some handy audio advice guys in NSW!!! Much easier to offer advice when ur actually in the car lol

I say more of you guys should get down to a CAASQ meet, they're a bit of fun and good to see some top quality setups.

Hmmmmm

Dont think the FS-60's and the Audison SRx2 as good as they sound could mix it up with some of the other amuter sterios. Bass wont be a problem with my new G5 :bowrofl: 15/15 :bowrofl:

I'd say SQ is 30% what you've got and 70% how u use it.

Similar to other things hey :bowrofl:

Yeah one day I might go see what the tuning deal is.. I know Marty is only to happy to see me lol and then yeah. Have never entered any comps yet ( SQ or SPL ) cause really I dont know how good my system is. I think it is great but I know people spend lots more. But yeah with some help and time off work I may enter something.
