If by in-face you mean a headunit that does mp3/wma, I'd probably recommend the Pioneer 4650/4750. You can get them well under $300. I had one in my last car and was happy with it - having said that, there would be no shortage of different brands of headunits that do mp3 these days.

I wouldn't expect you could find one for that price unless it was second hand (or off the back of a truck.)

You'll be able to get one for under $200 but it'll suck.

What like some knock-off brand = "Suny, Konwood, Pion-ear" ??
So what brands are worth getting?

Thought about an ipod mini?
Other than that there are some good entry level Pioneer mp3 players. Look for sales at JB hifi. JVC make excellent units on a budget too...

Whats the craic with these I-pods?? Are they smart carded or similar and just work like headphones? How do they mate to the OEM 3rd Gen cd player?

hmm oem 3rd gen cd player has no aux input so will be hard to conventionally hard wire it.
U could use an fm transmitter from jb / jaycar which plugs into the aerial. Then either go straight into the headphone socket. (dodgy)
Or buy a belkin charger and go in through the ipod line out which also gives you the ability to charge it and pause on engine turn off.
You can buy an ipod fm transmitter but quality is useless.
Or upgrade headunit to one with aux in and go from there.
If you want, you can swap for my OEM 3rd gen tape deck with aux input. But I wouldnt sell it cos i want to be able to return the car to stock easily if i need to sell.
Many options....

The JVC KDG 615 (RRP $299) heads up my system and it is Bl^^dy unreal value for money.. It sounds nice looks nice and has all the features you will ever need in head unit.. Speakers go hard straight off the deckand it has a remote..
I would go the extra effort and get one.. It won't let you down..

JVC, Panasonic and to a degree SONY...
Just don't buy a dirt cheap Deck as you are only asking for trouble..
Avoid Avalanche or Akai or Sanyo head units...

I must say i will sound biased but after much research before buying a deck, i came to the conclusion panasonics are the best value for money.
The deck i have is abit above your range but it's obtainable for 350, it's got mp3, 3 preouts (front, rear, sub), high pass filter for your speakers, low pass filter for your subs and sub volume. It has an equalizer too but i dispise those digital things. And when you get an ipod, like me it's got aux in, which is a breeze to setup and saves you from buying those expensive ipod addons that pioneer and alpine are selling. Plus later on if you want incar dvd (it's beyond me why anyone would) then you can just plug the aux in too.
I'm not too sure about the internal amp in that head unit cos i don't use internal amps but it can't be too bad, rated at 50*4, so at least you can get 10w of distortion free from it!
Oh it's motorized too, i'm not a big fan of that so bah! But the screen can turn off so you can concentrate on your driving and not have the equivelant of a blue neon shining in your face at night.
Overall it's good value for money, and the sound quality is very good. Compared to higher priced other units it's probably 5/10, but when you consider the price and functionality it's high 8's!

I bought a JVC KD-G416 a bit over a month ago for $198 at JB. It's magic, works perfectly, shows the track title, disc, artist in a scrolling display. Has a remote.

hmm oem 3rd gen cd player has no aux input
The factory headunit in my old TJ Exec had aux-in via a stereo headphone jack on the front. No reason you couldn't hook an iPod up through that, in fact my Dad does it with his MD player into the headunit in his VRX...
