View Full Version : Auto shifting a bit clunky and dodgy....

I am not sure if i am being paranoic or if i genuinely have something to worry about.

I will note that i have a 1999 TH Executive with only 54,000Kms on it, before I got it I would say it was driven like a pansy....I dont make a habit of thrashing it but I do often give it a bit.. Anyway to the point....

Only recently have I noticed that when i slow down and the auto box shifts down to say 1st it some times clunks, but im not sure if this is just compression or what. Also sometimes when I just tap the accelerator in 1st going aobut 30kmph it jolts off and goes....I dunno if this is just power pulling it or the auto box.

THe reason I am probably being like this is because I know i have on a select few occasions had the car moving in reverse and put it into drive and given it a bit. Often I will be slightly moving back wards after reversing out of a driveway and put it into drive before its completely stopped. Can this hurt it, and would this be anything to do with what I have been describing.

Also I dont know if this could have any effect on it, but my car sorta had a bit of a beating last weekend. I was in syndey in this back street I wasnt familiar with, and it was night time and I came up to this speed bump really hard, but it was one that launches the car then lets it smash into the ground head first, and thats exactly what it did. This couldnt have really ****ed anything could it? I know the air con hose was sticking out when i looked to check the sump...

I must mention its not extreme really, but its a little clunk, not a noise just a jolt when downshifting SOMETIMEs and when taking off from a slow rolling start

Help....

Also, How much damage could i have done if i somehow forgot I put it into Low gear as I approached but didnt take it out (as in actually L) at the toll gates, then took off at quite a pace and then realised only around 7000- 7500 RPM that it wasnt changing...tehhee I know its bad and I didnt mean it but seriosuly how much damage could i have done that I cant notice..

Well those are all my worries on paper now, please just set my mind at ease :D

The same thing is happening to my car at the moment. However 12000 k's ago it had a new transmission put in. It is in the workshop at the moment. He seems to think that it may have something to do with my throttle position sensor and I should give the car a tune. All will be revealed in a couple of days...I will keep you posted.

I got mine back and its just to do with the Throttle position sensor setting the revs too high making it rev to high when going into gears. So I just need a service...transmission is not about to blow up  .

as for ur auto box i would say check ur ATF if its burnt brown colour/smells burnt then go off to ur local mechanic and get some prices on servicing the box should make it feel good again

as for revving to over 7000, pretty sure u will bouce off redline at around 6800 or so, its happened to me before when i had a traffic light race (against Braez) left it in L wasnt watching the rev's before i knew it i hit redline and it bounced back, if it was only done once i doubt it will damage ur car, do it many times and im sure it will

as for launching the magna into the air, check engine bay for anything abnormal, of course someting could have been damaged, or it wasnt damaged at all, really wont find out til it starts making funny noises :P

Magna transmissions start to get a little rough when the tranny oil gets only slightly dirty. The first thing i would to is get a transmission fluid flush. Get a tranny mechanic to do it because they change all the fluid including the fluid in torque converter. Just dumping the tranny oil and topping it up is only changing about half of what they hold. You will be suprised the difference a tranny oil flush will make.

As for selecting a gear when going in the opposate direction, dont think this would have something to do with the rough change but wouldnt make a habbit of doing it. Wouldnt be to good for it, and as for the getting air incodent, again, doubt it would have caused it but it wouldnt be to good for the cars front end so wouldnt do that again.

How much am i looking at for a transmission flush? and I am assuming this has never been done before, would it be common for it to be getting rought at 50,000kms?

Tranny flush at my local mitsi is around the $170 mark. That's fluid, filter (take off your snorkel to see the filter) and reset the carputer.

The gear box is tempermental, especailly if you don't drive consistently.
My TE box is a little odd at times. For example when the car is cold, I'll pull up at the the lights, I'll hear the engine rev (like it's in neutral) then it clunks in to first.
Or going up a hill - the box knows not to change up a gear, but then you crest, it sort of surges (sounds like neutral again) then clunks into the next gear. Apparently this is normalish for this gear box with this trans puter.

And yes, she always runs smoother after a good flushing.
I daren't do it myself
1) I have no way of getting all fluid out
2) has to be done at operating temperature (a 15 minute drive) - thats around 170C - there's no way I'm gonna do that under a car on jack stands when I can't dodge in a hurry. Let someone get paid to be scalded!

Yeah you would be looking at the mid $150's i would think.

Yeah it probably wont have been done before but it should be done every 40,000 odd k's i think the manual said. If you have been driving it hard which u said you had then it doesnt take long at all to burn the oil in these transmissions. If you drove it fairly quickly consistantly then it could be as low as 10,000 or 15,000k's before the oil starts to discolour.

You have a TH though which had all the bugs ironed out of them so i doubt there is an issue with the transmission. Also reset your computer by disconnecting battery for about 10 mins then reconnecting it. Idle might be a bit funny same with gear shifts but just drive it softly until it sorts itself out usually being 15 mins driving.

I disconnected my battery terminals last time for like 1 min and everything was reset or does it disconnection for longer to actually reset?

I dont actually know how long it takes but mechanics have said leave it for upto 30 mins or over night if possible.
Worth a go.
