View Full Version : Car dies after startup
I've been having problems where on a cold start, my car fires up and then stalls about a second after. Occasionally producing a backfire.
I was hoping it was a spark plug problem and that it would be fixed once they were changed at my 100,000k service, but it wasnt.
Just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems with their car?
Its still on the original battery, which I thought some of you said wasnt much chop.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as it seems to do it more often now the weather is getting colder.

Have the same problem occassionaly so its kinda hard to fix. Quite random, always starts in the end but not good.

this could be a long shot, but the magna must have a automatic choke right?
if it doesnt then disregard the following thoughts:
it could be that the choke might be a little skrewed up. if it only happend when its cold, and you start it up, maybe its letting out the choke too early and it stalls. maybe even the idle rev is set too low.
but as i said. just a long shot.

Had same problem with my TJ2 . Knew my battery was original so changed it for new one and had no more problems !! There are quite a few threads in the forums that deal with this , they sure helped me out of a frustrating situation . Hope this helps !

OK i got mine fixed today.
Apparently it's to do with the chip in the key. The TJ's seem to have this problem where the ignition whatever doesn't matc up with the chip in the key so it shuts itself down after you start it. You should still have warrenty so go visit the dealership. Mine is fine now but yeah quiet common apparently.
Damn, mines out of warranty. Any idea how much it would cost? Should say on your warranty slip.

Errr sorry man i just walked in threw my key's down and walked out.
Well I bought a new battery yesterday and it seems to have fixed the problem. I didnt realise how far up **** creek my old battery was.
Car starts quicker, much smoother and responsive, and headlights are brighter.
Not to mention my door remote doesnt need you to be 30cms away from the car for it to work!

This is a very common problem and a new battery will 100% fix your problem
Your battery probably holds 13.8volts while its sitting under no load but if you put it under load (ie during the starting process) it will probably drop to around 9volts which isnt enough to run the rest of you electrical components, hence the reason the car turns over then stalls
New battery for sure..........
I had a mate test my battery and it was around 14.2 wth no load and I *think" 12.something underload. But with his battery tester thing that you stick in the battery liquid, it was in the white.
Goes green, white and then red.
Just glad its all fine now! :D
