View Full Version : ideling... What does your car idle at ?
Hey all,
I'm a little concearned with my car as in neutral it is ideling at about 1100rpm, now if it was cold I could understand the automatic choke coming in, however it does this when the car is in neutral and the needle exactly halfway. So at normal running temp basically. Then once in gear, it sits at about 750rpm, however when we first purchased the 91' TR it was ideling alot lower. The only difference is that we have serviced it. Any ideas here ?
And above all, what does your car idel at in gear and in neutral.

my TR:
nuetral = 1,200 rpm
in gear = below 700 rpm
n it shakes like its being pushed.

Fair enough... similar to my car then. I'll assume it's normal lol.

anyone know why it does this tho? It seems to be a common thing with all TR's is it? I remember that once I had fitted my POD the car didnt shake when I was stopped and I was in gear. This lasted for one trip then the car started to shake again.

Neutral - 750rpm, in Drive - 600rpm. In stop/start traffic an idle that's as high as 1100rpm is going to chew through petrol like no tomorrow.

As far as I understand the idle should be around 750 rpm in neutral/park.
My Verada has a high idle at the moment, but I cant set it properly until I have replaced my O2 sensor. Assuming everything is OK on your car. Then I would check these two things.
Firstly check the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), or the idle speed screw if carby model.
Secondly check the accelerator cable is not too tight.
I mentioned that my car was idling fast to the last mechanic who did a service on it not long ago and he just stared blankly and wondered what I was talking about. Seemed normal to him. I wonder how many other mechanics think the same.
If both of these are fine I would be thinking there is a problem somewhere else.

Cold startup - 1100
warm neutral - 900ish
in gear - 750 (shakes like a salt shaker)
but my car has some problems, might have to replace my oxygen sensor, and have a look at my tps and isc.. gotta get that fixed might help.. but i dunno

neutral/Park @ 600
Drive just about 500.
My car doesn't vibrate so i dont have my idle that high. Could explain why my revs are pretty low doing 100km/h (around about 21/2200.)

At first startup mine idles at about 1500rpm, but doesnt take long for revs to drop to about 800 - 850 rpm. Mind you, mine is the V6. In gear, it stalls unless moving lol. Good ol manuals...

umm might be the idle stop screw yet unliky, i drive a tn magna with the TP efi engine that idles at 1250, yet all my vacume is disconnected, so it might be vacume related, or it might be a choke not disengadging

my car idles at around 1700 cold sometimes, and its just after a new head and a hell of a lot of other work. then it can drop as low as 6-700 warm.
i dunno why it idles so high, it must eat the petrol
Looks like i won't assume it is normal then as it is killing the economy. I'll see about lowering the idle and see what happens.
No time over the weekend, looks like i'll fiddle during the week.
Where do i locate the Throttle Position Sensor, and how do I go about lowering the idle of the car ?
It is a 2.6L 4cyc Injected model 1991 TR.
Any help here appreciated, the hayes tr handbook is completely useless sometimes.

when in park or neutral idles at 800rpm but when in drive idles anywhere between 400-500rpm, feals like its about to stall all the time and vibrates like a *****.
