I have a mod Planned

for it i need to be able to make a clear mould of a part of my car

so a replica of the item but reproduced in solid clear perspex or another solid clear material

so does anyone know how to do this or where it can be done,

the said item is not stuctural, and has no moving parts

and small enough to post. so if the place that does it is in VIC the no worries etc.

if i find out this can be done i will do it and then post a how to and pics on it,

so please, Lend a Brutha a Hand.

They would make a plaster mould of the part I would imagine, then put the sheet of acrylic over it, put it in an oven and heat it until it just softens and melts into the mould a bit.

i duno if that would work.. if it has sharp corners, melting it wont help, unless you melt it to near-liquid stage, but then it would run down the sides :\

Make an identical mould from craftwood. MUST BE SOLID! No sharp edges, the mould be able to be lifted off - like when you make a sand castle with a bucket. The first casting will either be the one you keep or if you want more, the casting is filled with epoxy to make a super mould that lasts nearly forever. The craftwood moulds die pretty quickly.

Drop into your local panelbeaters and ask them if they know?

Perspex is made from a material called PMMA - its a two pack system (resin + cataylist "hydrogen peroxide"), its liqid in form at room temp but extreamly reactive (sunlight can get the reaction going also)
its ex-othermic (produces heat "lots of heat" as by product)
Needs to be heated in an oven to set (ramp up the temp slowly - if not cracks will from)

Note: can not be re-heated to mould,(its a thermoplactic thus will char)

but it can be molded under vacume presure - like your bath tubs, sinks and such.

it can be clear or any color you like (masterbatch colors are usaualy used in the product)

As for a mold - wet mold is usualy glass (sheets)

dry mold - vacume type - metal ot other soild material.

look into a pro doing the job, it will not be cheap as a mold will need to be struck.

good luck

The mold can be expensive if you pay to get it done. Best to ask for some craftwood offcuts, get some pointers on how to contruct the mold for vacuum friendly operation. Take it from there. You WILL need a jigsaw etc to make life much easier. Remember ANY imperfection will show up from your mold so take the time!
