Hey guys,
Went to a tyre shop today and was very interested in what they had to say. I have a magna sports with the standard 16's. In standard form the tyres are 215/60/R16. Now apparently I can put 225/50/R16 on my standard 16's.
Some worries I have are:
*Will 225/50's affect my insurance if I crash since the tyre place card says 215/60 for 16inchers.
*Will fitting slightly smaller profile wheels greatly affect my speedo and gear ratios of the car?
Thanks. :D

I was told by a tyre place that it was illegal to fit lower profile tyres than what's specified on the placcard. This is NT though so different states may have different rules.

Probably not, as long as it's safe and legal. A phone call to your insurance company will tell you for sure.

If you match the profile to the width properly, no. Perhaps someone else can tell you specifically if the rolling diameter of a 225/50-16 is the same as a 215/60-16.

Definitely. In NSW there isn't even a maximum diameter wheel, as long as the rolling diameter of the wheel+tyre combo isn't more than 15mm different to the original, and it doesn't touch anything.

ok, check this out http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
215/60/16 = diameter 664.4mm
225/50/16 = d 631.4mm
so if u did 100 u be doin 95kph
big drop there so would not be legal if nsw as said prevouis are 15mm.
have a play with that site 225/55/16 be gettin close to diameter and speedo for ya.
d= 653.9
100kph be doin 98.4.

you'll find the tyre 225/50 want be legal and void insurance. so its not worth it.
y u going 225 50 ? the width or the low porfile look.
and if nsw rules are 15mm no more. dont bother going to that tyre shop or inform the guy u spoke to he has no idea.

zaphod, i dont know how u came to your conclusion, but it is wrong, because the width of the tyre shouldn't affect your speedo at all......only the diameter
anyways, in answering your question, i have 50 mm profile tyres on my 16inch rims and it works a treat. Cheaper tyre for the load rating.
later

Yeah i was just curious. Will stick with the 60 profile then.
Benny you can use a 2xx/50/R16 because your stock tyres are 195/65/R15 where my stock tyres are 215/60/R16. Thanks for your help guys. :D

225/50 is ok, BUT I dare you to find one that meets the load rating for the Magna. Its the load rating that could?? void your insurance, but I doubt it but why risk it.I have 225/55 on mine.
