G'day,

Just lookin for a bit of info on these holes in my dash...
Its a 98 TF and I have no idea what they're for?!?
Any ideas on what they do, what I can do with them or what others have done?
Any ideas appreciated.
I was thinkin about making a mould to replace the plugs for a tweeter...

Yeah, it's a hole for a tweeter, which I think came with the Verada, or was intended to anyway. Having said that, it's an awful place to put a tweeter.

Also the only way to get to the bolt behind it...

Im pretty sure the veradas had the tweeter in the delta panel, this may have been for a 4" speaker on the dash, but i havent seen one there before.

They were locations for the tweeters in the early 3rd gen Verada's, ie KE-KF.

Don't know exactly when, but in the latter models the tweeters were moved to the delta panel (basically where the side view mirrors should be), and those with 10 speaker audio systems would have tweeters in the delta panel, and also in those holes as well (could be midrange, no idea I havn't been in one yet).

Yep, Verada's have a midrange there, easily lifted with fingernail or screw driver

yeah my altera also has a tweeter there, but it is actually built into the cover so it would be pretty difficult to replace. although i wouldn't mind adding a centre speaker to each side...

Thats what I thought too, or for ice creams... :D

will a 3 inch midrange speaker fit in? it looks like if I want a speaker in there, i'll have to do a bit of a michael jackson and fiddle around a bit...

I'm planning splits in the doors, but the I'm worried the midbass might be a bit much so I want to get midrange speakers in here to give a fuller sound, beter imagery. This will compliment the tweeter however so I might have to play with the levels a bit.

Anyone know of speakers that will go in here?

The factory speaker located in that position in the Ralliarts is Mitsu part# MR924828 (Nominal Power: 10W / Max Power: 20W). It has a cap soldered to it so is setup more like another tweeter than anything else. (Would post some pics but the batteries in my digital camera are flat.)

I've Just recently upgraded the speakers in my Ralliart using the Eclipse SC8365 3-way component speaker system (100 Watt RMS), the small mid fits in that position very nicely. The 6.5" woofer is in the standard door position and the tweeter in the same location used on the VR-X.

Sounds like the thing to do, might have to have a look at those splits. I take it that there's a stock speaker cover to replace the solid one then? I'll have that if your not using it :D

I'd be interested in the stockies if I wasn't so keen to 'unstock' my car :D

Or did you mean the midrange component is soldered to the cap?

Most standard 4" speakers fit in the same spot in 2nd gens, I suspect the same is probably true in 3rd gens too.

Quoted from a review of the 2002 RalliArt:

The system is connected to two 8cm tweeters located in the dash pad, two 3.5 cm tweeters located in the delta panels, two 6-1/2" 2-way speakers located in the front doors, and two 6"x9" 3-way speakers fitted in the back parcel shelf.

Here's the whole review: RalliArt Review (http://autoweb.drive.com.au/cms/A_55022/newsarticle.html)

Like it or hate it I don't care, but in my opinion... better to have then not to have... so I just drilled a little hole in them and fed the Pioneer bullet wires down through... I believe the sound is reverberating off the windscreen just fine... I can certainly hear them well...

Very similar to how I have my eclipse units mounted.

Perhaps we should relocate this thread to the Car Audio section?

What exactly have you used there? Obviously focal gear ( ) but what size, model?

I dont know why but I really want to use these spots for something and I recon midrange is the way to go.

Hi,

In the TL/TW VR-X, where are the 10 speakers located, in the brochure it says 10 Speakers in 8 Positions, i can visibly see 6, parcel shelf, front door, and tweeters in the "delta panel", where else are they hiding? are the rest up the top on the dash? and do they count two way speakers as 2 speakers?

Yeh 2way speakers are counted as two...
In the ralliarts mitsu say there is 14 speakers... what they fail to mention is the rear parcel shelf speakers are 3way..

They are Focal K2 2way splits, 6.5", sound sooo sweet. Almost went Utopia but liked the sound of these better  I would have loved a set of 3 ways but that means lots of costom work and lots of extra $$$. I ripped the ****ty mits paper tweeters out of the holes in the dash and put the focal tweeters in, disconnected the other mits tweeters on the delta panels, did some sound deadening in the doors and popped the mids in. It's a pitty you can't see the speaker cos they look so nide, not to mention the nicely painted basket and chromed magnet.

Argh!!!

Hoping that was a joke...

:p

OK I need to intervene here, do what you want with my advice but from an SQ perspective for good stereo imaging you need to have two distinct point sources. (left and right) By mounting your tweeters more than a handspan from the woofer you will notice separation of the high and mid frequencies. This is bad for your sound. Now whilst many factory positions involve placing the tweeters on the dash this also helps with the fact that OEM stereos have no power and they have to mount their tweeters as close as possible to the driver.
This is different for subs as frequencies below 80 hz cant be localised by the ear. Also different for extremely high frequencies (>10khz)

If you have any reasonable power (aftermarket headunit, amplifiers etc) You should give the kickpanels a try or somewhere near the lower door area. THis overcomes a few problems. As I said, the issues with separation as the tweeter is near the woofer.

Another factor is path difference. You cant sit in the middle of your car. Yet for good stereo imaging you should be equidistant from both speakers. If you measure the difference in length from the left and right tweeter when mounted on the dash or the delta panels you will notice that the difference is much greater than if you measure to the depths of the kickpanels. By having a small path difference you will not have the left side overpowering the right side. (or vice versa for passengers)

For good stereo imaging you want the smallest gap between drivers, each speaker as far away from the listener as possible, in front as far as possible and on axis to the oposing listener (or higher). Also you want the listener equidistant from the sources.

I have heard kickpanel setups that would blow your mind. Stage height well above the dash with all the speakers in the kicks and door OEM positions

Peace

Tim
