Gday peeps I just done on oil change on my TJ magna duel fuel 185.000 on clock 12,000 since last change.Alot of country km's on the car.I put in penrite hpr30 20w/60 and the motor sounds like the tappets are playing up.Also it idles rougher and doesn't accelarate as smooth as before. The temp gauge only goes to half before it went up to two thirds.I hope it didn't have syn in it before I had no way of telling what was in it.What to do now?peeps I need help.My missus told me to get it done at mitsu, now shes spewing on me.The car was her valentines day present  Any advice on similar situations would be thanked :)

Nothing wrong with Penrite oil (sexy packaging :bowrofl:), but why such a heavy oil (20w\60).If your car uses no oil I would use something as low as 5w or 10w and nothing over 40w.I use hpr5 myself.

My TJ manual say to to use 0W30 grade oil so 20W60 is too thick.
My 1994 mazda tappets are starting to sound (185000kms) as well and I've been advised by others in the know to use a lighter oil like the 0W30 or the fully syn 0W40 in the next oil change.
hope this helps.

I am glad I came across this thread. I have had a similar problem beginning in my car as well. When it starts from cold and as the pressure builds there is a tappet sound. As soon as the car has been running for 10-15 seconds it stops. It's due for it's 115,000 service soon, so I hope it's just the oil getting a little old.
Puts my mind at rest.

20W60 is way too heavy all you are likely to do is harm your engine by running crap that thick. I used to run 20W50 in my Elante with it's worn engine. Once rebuilt I will be running thinner stuff :)

I just used Pennzoil 15/50 Synthetic blend. Is that stuff alright ??

Drain your oil and get rind of the penrite oil - wouldn't put it on my wheelbarrow.
Replace it with a good 20w40 or 15w50 SJ / SL mineral grade oil. better lubrication, no noisy tappets and problems solved. You don't need synthetic and change your oil every 7500km.
Hmm right, would not drive your wheelbarrow either

HPR 30 is too thick for your motor, use the HPR10. I can get you in contact with many many people on this forum who I have done work for who all now use penrite.
As previously posted I have had tests done in a lab after running several oils, Penrite tested as one of the best non synthetic oils.
In addition to this, I have put penrite into cars that were having trouble with noisy lash adjusters being caused from the wrong oil and have found the results great. Send Lethal or Familywagon a PM and I am sure they will tell you of the results as I have done work on several cars in each of the family's.

i was running the recommended grade from the manual, shell helix 20w-50 and since winter it has realy started running rough. with the cold temperatures the oil is taking too long to flow to the top of the engine, lots of tappet noise and rough acceleration.
ive done and oil change and put it castrol magnatec 10w-40 and the car is running HEAPS better smooth starts and acceleration. the pressure rises much faster now and the engine seems slightly more responsive.
btw i think if your running gas, you need thin oil around 0w-30
the only reason to put thick oil in is
A: you need to drive in high temperature areas or tow heavy loads for long periods or race the car.
B: parts in your engine are very worn and need thick oil to maintain pressure.

That oil will be fine, I have many cars running around with that grade.
Being Gas I would rather use HPR Gas 10 though, this is made for your sort of application.
In my Verada, I use HPR30 and have never had any problems. It is good in an older engine and remember mine is now 13 years old.
In newer motors I would use HPR10 or 15 but not above that.
