ok was reading VR-X II's post about his supercharger where he mentioned sprintex discovered what they believed to be manufacturing fault with our cat converters...
the post can be found here (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18259&page=10&pp=10)
The first thing Sprintex did when they got the car was to strip the engine and exhaust system down. What they found was a 'mystery' chunk of metal in the Cat that was restricting the flow by over 25% ... The general consensus is that the 'chunk' was due to a Mitsubishi manufacturing issue.
so for those who have installeda high flow cat in their exhaust systems... has anyone discovered major benefits in terms of performance at all? through searching the forums i found that most ppl have been able to get one at <$300... do people reckon this is a good investment?
i really am lookin to get all my mods in before i get a haltech installed and tuned!
opinions appreciated
Definetly worth it! I had a hi flow cat and a Lukey installed at the same time and I notice a big difference. I just recently had to change the muffler back to the original one and the power wasn't much different. Point I'm trying to make is that the hi flow cat did more than the muffler. Oh yeah and apperently there is an issue with the Mitsu. cats because mine had broken off bits of metal in it too.

i have no idea but according to VR-X II, it is obviously a problem ... i mean a 25% blockage in terms of gas flow
it is actually interesting that no one has discovered this until now !!

I picked up a copy of Zoom magazine recently and they had an article about "Magic" brand high-flow cats. They're 4" in diameter and testing showed a 30Kw improvement when fitted to a 250Kw turbo Toyota Soarer. They're not cheap at about $500, but might be worth checking out.

thats my theory ............ i think its the little mods that help make the bigger mods work better .............. if that makes sense lol ... hmm
syn·er·gy (snr-j)
n.
The interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects.
or in other words....
I'm getting a high flow cat.

haha u lost me :P lol
what cat u looking at and what prices? .. im interested to cos im pricing one atm!
haha im gessing the dyno day has got u into the modding for power modd now ? .... i think everone is a bit that way after they get dyno'd
Yeah after saturday I'm now after next best value for money performance mod. I have no idea about prices or what cat's are out there. Thats nothing a bit of research can't solve.
Reading this thread it sounds like a hi-flow cat is often overlooked and is only given the time of day when the rest of the pipe work is replaced. It may well be the next best thing after a straight through muffler.....and other pimpedness.

I got a High Flow Cat (not sure on brand nothing flash cost around $250 installed) and a Dual Carbon Fibre Cannon Muffler :P and the Cat did a great improvement with idle and also an increase in mid to top end power, and of course sound :) (due to muffler) besides that there is nothing special about the Cat, It is a boring looking piece but because it is hi flow it has huge input and output and a honey comb centre (not chewy) dont go for exspenive ones, no one sees them, they dont do any better and they cost more than what they are worth.

the bloke i got my entire exhaust fitted through said the standard cat on the 3rd gen magna's is fine, its 2.5in from factory and you won't gain anything from changing it even to a hiflow.... he's done a fair few magna's and owned one himself.
BUT having a couple of members find a "chunk" of metal in their cat is worrying.
might ask him about cutting it out and havin a look....

so BLKMAG did u keep the OEM cat in ur system?
i have read in threads b4 that the stock cat was already good enuf from the factory... and i wouldnt have raised this issue if i didnt read VR-X II's thread. it would really sh!t me if that manufacturing fault is actually robbin us power

sure did, replaced EVERYTHIN except the cat. kept 2 16" resonators in place but upgraded to 2.5" instead of the 2.25" stock ones.
yeh, like i said it is a bit worrying. i will probably investigate further and if i find something i'll let ya's know :)
