Evening everyone, following on from my last post - i have a TN Exec auto 2.6l carb. its a wagon. At about 100k's or under load in overdrive mostly but its noticable in other gears. Has this happened to anyone else? It vibrates teh whole car about every second for a second on and off if that makes any sense. There are no other problems than this on the car - it has 142 k's on it and is in fairly good nick.Is it just a matter of changing the oils in the hope that might work? It did go away for a while but has come back again now so i am thinking it could even be a wiring problem?(not that i know if there is any wiring in there!)

bad waterpump bearings can cause this sort of shuddering - have a look at your water pump and see if there's any signs of play in the pulley.

Now that is fascinating - i would have never thought of that....

How could you tell apart from play in the pulley? It never overheats (however keep in mind i do live in Tassie so hot days arent really alll the common!) and generally hasnt missed a beat since we got it but it sometimes is a pain in the bum to start, like this morning when you ahve to rip the top of the carb off to get it to start...

well it was a very common problem with the first Commodores - they didn't leak or overheat either (though presumably they would eventually as the bearing continued to degrade) but the shuddering through the whole car was something to behold at times, so yeah - if nothing else is obvious check your water pump.

i had a shuddering in overdrive... it was cos my transmission fluid was contaminated/old... worth your while getting the transmission serviced to eliminate as the problem - plus i'm sure it will only do good for our transmission anyways - seeing as the tranny's in these aren't the most reliable:doubt:

Now i heard that all they do when they "service" the tranny is just change the fluid - is this right? surely there has to be a oil filter of some description?

Has anyone got an online how to do it guide or do i go by the seat of my pants? Also what oil would one use?

from what i gather there is a filter that needs replacing... but your better off getting a full transmission flush (i did... and my transmission works as if it was brand new) it depends on if you think the shudder is from the trans... i'm just saying that when i had a shudder in overdrive - and sometimes in 3rd... it was my transmission

you can try replacing the fluid and filter - but i'd get the pro's to do it cos they got the machine that flushes it out - cos lots of fluid is still in the torque converter.

as for type of fluid, go the mitsu fluid - as putting the normal atf fluid (like dextron) will give you unpredictable results... do a search for transmission fluids and if you cant find anything, then perhaps post in the tech torque forums for a specific answer...

hope this helps,
Bill

dont go to a dealer... when i got my transmission serviced/rebuilt i went to someone that was recommended to me... MV Automatics at blackwood (i know your not in SA anymore... just a free plug for those guys :P)

just get a quote at different places... perhaps even get them to take the car out and tell you what they think it is... my local mechanic is always willing to give me advice when i ask him questions... even though he's not getting any buisness from it (well we did get a new motor through him)
