I am looking at rebuilding my engine while the car is off the road for the next 12 to 24 months or so, but I am also looking into buying a rebuilt engine. Obviously I won't know until I can get the block inspected etc. Initially I would like the slowly rebuild the engine after getting the block bored out slightly and then rebuild the heads etc.

I have called three places so far for prices on complete rebuilt engine (long block) and they have all given me similar prices of around $2700. Is this excessive?

The one thing I am after is quality. I am willing to spend a bit more to get decent parts and better warranty. So far all I can get is 12 month warranties at best.

So far I have a price of around $800 for a rebuild kit (pistons, ring, seals etc), but I will need to allow more for head requirements and any extras (including a new oil pump which I need to find a supplier for?).There is a very good engine rebuild place in town that can do all the machine shop work for me over time and I would enjoy the learning aspect of it all.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I don't need a quick fix solution as I do have time on my side.

I've also looked into reconditioned/replacement engines, and $2700 is reasonably cheap, considering one shop quoted me $4000 for a low k long motor...

When I enquired about having just the heads reconditioned, most mechanics said it wasn't worth it, as reconditioned/new heads will put more pressure on the bottom end of the engine, and you'll end up having to rebuild the whole engine in 6 months.

I was actually thinking today as to whether to just do the heads if the bottom end seems to be OK, but didnt really consider that theory.

So far I am looking at $800 for rebuild kit, plus whatever work needs to be done to the heads. Worst case I am looking at $410 for reworked head (if heads aint too bad this will prob be cheaper). So all up allowing $1600 for basic parts. Looking at new injectors, oil pump, new engine mounts, and cooling system overhaul as well.

One thing I forgot to ask, can anyone provide me with contact details for reputable suppliers for rebuild engines and/or places to get rebuild kits and associated parts? I am looking for better than average parts so want suppliers that will actually discuss what I want rather than just sell me the cheapest thing.

why do that could be in need of recondition too? if you got money do the engine yourself n least u know u got a good engine built.

Just buying a second hand was one option, but the quick unknown one.

Basically at the end of the day I would like to rebuild it with quality parts and learn all about the process as well. And hopefully I should have a close to new engine that should last many years of more driving. I am looking at some extras to give it some more bang. (oversized TB etc).

After the engine is done I was pondering getting the car resprayed, redoing the interior and turning it into a bit of a show piece. Long term plan though.

I havent any issues withe the transmission that is currently in it, so hopefully that should last a while longer.
