View Full Version : Upgraded Ground Cables
Ok kids
holidays are here!!
so yeah, took a look at my engine bay today, and finally found out where the other fat cable off the -ve post leads off to...
one goes to the the gearbox, the other goes somewhere to the chassis, under the air filter box.
Now....for some questions.
does anybody know how long these cables are?
will me common 4 gauge jaycar ring terminal be ok for bolting it up?
will oil gush out and my gearbox fall apart if i undo the red bolt? I mean..it is RED..ITS RED FOR A REASON...
I should disconnect the battery before i do anything

not shore, but red is normally a bad colour in a car.
Cos you don't get a nice happy green colour when your car is out of fuel, its depressing red, the colour of money into your car, again and again

most of the bolts on the gearbox are red, it's a painted counter-measure so when it goes thru a quality station on-line, they know it's been torqued up correctly.
kinda on-topic, i spoke to a guy at a car show that had a ralliart and added one of those engine earthing kits and actually got a decent gain out of it (about 4kW atw) and the stereo and everything seemed to work much better

The earthing cables should be less than 1 meter. Hahaha, if the bolts are tightened to a specific torque i don't think you should undo it without a way of putting the right torque back on it with a termial as well.
But hey it's your gear box, you screw it together however tightly you want it to.
While your at it might as well run another ground and ground that to a piston. I'm sleepy

The earth wire from your battery to the chassis should be as short as possible. There is probably one running to your transmission (and your engine should be earthed too) because it probably has rubber mounts which do not conduct electricity.
The earth connection to the chassis should be equal to or greater than the combined wires running from your positive terminal. (electricity actually flows from negative to positive, for those who didnt know).
In general your earth wire should be as big and fat as you can make it (within reasonable limits of course).

Why don't you just go for another bolt, there's 100's in the engine bay, what makes you wanna torque up a red one anyways. hahaha! i say... go for the challenge, and run earths to every bolt you see.
haha, yeah i did it today
went off to jaycar and got some crimp ring terminals, and cut up a bit of 4ga about 30cm long.
I found a hole on the engine mount. Like, there's a piece of welded steet which holds the rubber etc, and I saw a hole there.
Found a nut and bolt in the garage, and one of those spikey washer things, sanded back the point a little and bolted it on....
Makes no diff...haven't driven yet, doubt it will though.
