hi kids

As some of u may know i sprayed my interior panels all silver n stuff....but recently, that dude that sprayed his instrument cluster surround all red inspired me to do mine too. So today, i went out and brought another can of spray paint, and did the dial surrounds...makes everything feel all warm and fuzzy now :cool:

primer....300g i think, about $10 bucks maybe
can of pint, 300g $10 (brought it when i did my dash first time round)
sheet of 2000 grit sandpaper $1
1L tin of prepsol $13 bucks or so i think

Preperation...clean with prepsol, 4,5 layers of primer (not like anybody's going to touch my instrument cluster anyway, lol) and 6 layers or so of thin layers of paint.

took me....3 hours or so. I know...its a cold day, so i decided to chuck the surround into my oven for 20mins at low temp;) turned out great, and cuts down drying time by A LOT!

it sounds easy but im always so scared ill stuff something up, wot is "PINT" i assume u meant paint and how come u had 2 cans. Im thinking about doing all my dash red just trying to picture whether it would look good or not first.

magnat, it was piss. All the panels just unclip off. Use your fingers, push in the tabs and pull out. :D

Yeah, i like the silver....paint code is K9100 or something. U can get the paint from supercheap.

Its a metallic silver too, so its sorta a little shiney. If i put a clear coat on it it would probably be all glossy and unbearable.

as for the dial faces, i won't get 'em....unless they come in kph. Very sexy but shame there in MPH. Tassie is pretty good. Reminds me of New Zealand. I wouldn't want to move there though...unless I was retired or like seafood said, won the lottoo.

OK :doubt:

Start by adjusting your streeing wheel to the lowest position

There are two screws on the top part of the surround above the clear plastic window. Unscrew them, and pull out the entire surround. Its also held in by two clips on either side, behind the dimmer and speed alert buttons.

After u pull it out slightly, disconnect the wiring looms for the dimmer and speed controls. Now everything's exposed, you will see 4 screws on the entire cluster. they're on either side of either side, you can't miss them.

Oncce u unscrew them, pull it out gently, and disconnect the wiring loom behind it. The whole thing should be free for you to take out and throw around now :)

From memory (i have short term memory loss) there are 2 little screws up the top part that you need to unscrew.

Once there off you'll see that the plastic is held in by a series of clip tab things. You need to grab a little screwdriver, or push them in with your fingers. once all of them are disengaged, the plastic cover will come off. Same goes for the black surround. Its held in by a series of tabs you need to push. These tabs are all on the top and bottom of the entire cluster.

Now that its off, you're free to do whatever you want to it :D

Putting it back together is the reverse. You'll know how to put it back together once u take it out anyway.

Some points to remember:

Be gentle!!!!
be patient
there is thin, green computer ribben stuff all behind the cluster, so be gentle back there. You'll know what i mean when u take it out.
When sliding the thing back in, be gentle as there are wiring loom plug things that it sorta just mounts onto. And the contacts are the green ribbon cable. Again, you'll know what i mean when u see it.
Don't touch the needle's either, esp the fuel gauge one, coz it has a memory

As for painting techniques...its been covered many times. clean, prime, paint, sand etc etc..

Well you inspired me EEK, a great deal so i let the other half have his way with my center parts (car parts that is), of course my job in the whole thing was standing at the sink cleaning it all. At this stage we have just done the cluster surround and electric window surrounds. We have to get console parts as mine cracked a long time ago, picking them up tomorrow from crackajnr.
How ever will put pics up tonight of before and after and in a few days will put pics up of it completed.
Since we both have magnas The other half's car will be getting a make over to will also post pics for all to compare and enjoy.
