For the first time in months I managed to go to bed before 5am, and then....
I got in my daily driver magna this morning and found that the console lid was up and the coin box was open....i'm like WTF??? Then I notice that my unopened pack of cigarettes are gone from the console as are my fuel recipts but the coins are still there again i'm thinking WTF???. At this point i also noticed the LHR door was unlocked. So when I got home i asked my girlfriend if she got the recipts and cigarettes out of the car. She says NO. So i tell her someone has broken into the car. I found the recipts in a pile tucked under a bush in the front yard. I'm left thinking ok well at least the car wasn't stolen or damaged and wondering how the hell they got in as there was no sign of damage. So i looked at the car closer.
I was thinking they had got in the LHR door and that it might have been unlocked but my girlfriend swore she checked that side of the car was secure when we last parked it... I believe her.
I had cleaned the car on Thursday but there was now a pile of dirt on the back floor and on the back seat and on top of that, one of the hooks on the console lid was broken from where they have pulled it back to far. I then found a great set of 4 finger prints on the dash that i know aren't mine.
All this suggests to me that they have actually got into the back busted the console lid trying to get in it from behind and then climbed into the drivers seat stepping on the console and breaking it more.
I decided to remove the trim off the LHR door of a TR wreck I have and had a look.
I was shocked to find how easy it is to get it open.
I showed my girlfriend how to do it and she had a go, after 3 attempts she could consistantly get into the locked TR in less than 5 secs, she has NO previous break-in experience.

Having seen this security flaw in gen2, I have designed a plate to prevent access to the weak point that would be easy to fit at home with normal hand tools.
I intent to make one for my car and I could make a few to order. If ppl are interested, PM me.

I just recently replaced a window in my TS (LHR) and I must say that I was surprised at the amount of places I could jimmy around with a bit of wire to open the door. I can't say exactly where those places are, but I know what you mean for sure.

I'd be interested to see what you're doing. I suppose an alarm would be defeated by unlocking from the inside of the car?

An alarm should not be defeated on the event of the door being opened from the inside, as that is how break-in's occur.

I think you'll find a lot more cars will be as easy to unlock as the Magna's. Why? It's almost like a utilitiarian view. Do you prefer safety or security? You'll find many more people will lean towards the safety view. If a baby gets locked in the car with no key, then what do you do?

This is why I like the locks on the Commodore, they can be set to be 'deadlocked' and that means the door cannot be opened from the inside.

When I bought my TS brand new back in 1996, I remember the TR and TS made the news a fair bit for all the wrong reasons. I recieved 4 letters from Mitsubishi recalling all TS Magna's for mechanicle flaws back then. Then they made the headlines again saying they had security flaws. I remember there was ALOT of unhappy Magna owners back then, but I wasn't one of them. I wasn't with the rest of them jumping up and down about it, I had an alarm installed lol

I thought on the rear doors of the TR you can also set the door to be deadlocked? correct me if i am wrong

YOu're getting confused with child lock I think.

If child lock is enabled, it means if the door is unlocked, the inside door handle is inoperative. The door can only be opened from the outside.

When I refer to deadlock, well the lock mechanism itself cannot move, the lock switch inside will appear to be 'stuck'

Im just going to do Mr Bean's trick, weld a bunch of latches to the outside and padlock it shut.

thanks for clearing that up yeah i was thinking of it that way, LMAO a huge padlock on the outside of the car wouldnt look 2 attractive from the oustide but good security! :bowrofl:

lol nothing like an angle grinder will deal with that :P

If you have an angle grinder, I dont think theres alot of things that could stop you from getting into a car, including the roof.

ROFL

Imagine coming out in the morning and finding the top of your car hacked open.

ok, i'll clear a few things up here,
There are ways to get into the front doors that are hard enough to delay a thief but easy enough for the NRMA or RAC. The entry point I found in the back door is not on the inside!!!!!
The child safety lock does not prevent break-in access and the method used to break into my car does not unlock the door it just opens it.
An alarm is a good idea but it does not prevent inital access or stop someone snatching a bag etc, and doing a runner.

as for Commodores having dead locks...yes VR and VS had deadlocks but I think holden stopped fitting them to VT and later.

GTrice, I don't want to describe this method in too much detail as it's too easy to do.
All i will say is that the first step in this method is that you have to hold the LHR external door handle out.
