ok as another part of my new boot install making it all unplugable im going to have RCA plugs like the ones in walls in audio shops where i just plug the rcas from the head unit into the amp box and then solder the new RCA leads onto the wall plug thingo and run them to the amps.

Ok firstly i know its doable and i just intend on buying a 1M long rca male to male lead and cutting it in half to run make it into 2 rca leads to solder onto the wall plugs. Will i need to buy the shielded ones as it is only running from the outside of the box to the amps? And is it as simple as cutting the RCA leads and then soldering it onto the wall plug.

hope this makes sense as im trying new stuff here and my terminology is a bit dodgy
thanks for any help

Yeah it is easy.

You could get the shielded stuff to be safe, I dont know how much deference it will make. But just make sure you solder the positive wire to the centre pin of the RCA connector and the shield/negative wire to the shell of the RCA connector.

Cheers

so there 2 wires inside a single4 rca lead?..hmmm

so will i need to also shield the wall plug where it solders in? What should i use if i need to do this?

Some RCA leads have grounding wires running through them as well, all in all it wont be too hard, if it has a positive and negative lead it will be straight forward just make sure you get the right polarity. And take care to solder well,

If you want to DIY ur own interconnects/RCAs check out http://www.deadwaxcafe.com/vzone/wires.asp

In a single rca lead (ie for left and right channels) there are 4 wires. These will split up into two connectors at each end.

Peace

beacause this wiring will just be inside my amp box, will i need the shielded RCA's or can i just get the normal gold ones for it?

thanks again tim, i guess the best way is to cut an old RCA lead open and have a go which ill do tonight

the best would be if i could find a wall socket plug thingo which has female connectors on both side but after spend 30mins at tandy today getting various bits and pieces i couldnt find one there.

Try jaycar if you can they have heaps of stuff like that and grab a catalogue, easy to figure out what you want to do when u know what you can get.

Sheilded cables will be the best bet.
Otherwise you can make your own and just shield them with tinfoil... lol

If the runs are only short and not near power wires you may be able to get away without sheilding.

Peace

the runs might be shorts an 100mm, if i can put the plugs where i want, 500mm at the most

edit, tin foil

will have a look at jaycar tonight

thanks again

Wont be a problem as long as there's no power leads nearby. Many shielded rca leads arent shielded towards the ends where they split into two anyway.

Do a good job soldering/securing (so the solder isnt supporting them if they get tugged and you'll be fine.)

yeh they wont get tugged as they will be inside my amp box and the amps will be secured so they dont slide around.

i might buy shielded ones for the speakers and stock ones for the sub.

Yeah sorry, I forgot you were cutting it in the middle. I was thinking on the connector end after the split!
So yeah you will need to make sure when you cut it you can identify which is left and right. A digital multimueter with continuity (or just normal ohms) will help you do this.

ran out of time to look at this tonight, got caught up with soldering and wiring up the rest of the amp box. Might go see the guys at my local electrical repairs and consult them about it
