Hi All, GREAT site for Magna buffs-have had a TJ 2001 Advance for 2 weeks & have devoured lots of info from here. Quick one-when cold my car nearly hits 3K revs before shifting to 2nd, then when warmed up around 2.5K revs before shifting. Since there is no "economy" setting on the car, is it just a little more aggressively geared than other cars because it lacks a power/economy option? Hoping this is totally normal, I have the 3.5 auto. Appreciate any advice. :D

I am no car buff, but im thinking maybe your car was driven agressively by the previous owner. And from what i heard, the gearbox learns your driving style and adjusts accordingly (ie. revs higher before gear change). I could be wrong though.

Maybe you need to get the gearbox reset. I did wonders on mine.

No surprise i probably get a million replies saying i dont know ****. :D

Oh, welcome to AMC also. hehehehe Almost forgot about that. Yes, this site is very informative. Dont be shy to use the SEARCH tool. You will find dozens of info with it. :)

Reset your ECU and it should fix up your problems! But don't reset it unless you know what you're doing!

LOL! Its simple really.. Disconnect the battery for a while.. say an hour or so.. Re-connect it and set up your settings and WALA! You're done!

But doesn't the gearbox have its own computer? Or does the ECU also control the gearbox?

he means the settings on your stereo (ie preset stations etc)...also the code for you stock stereo should be with the owners books/papers...get rid of that crap stock headunit anyways.
u shouldn't need to wait 30mins + with the battery disconnected to reset your ecu...5 minutes is fine...

Gearbox will adapt to your driving style in a couple of weeks by itself anyway. Personally I find the gearbox to adapt very quickly. And despite popular belief - I'm convinced based on my own experiences that it will rapidly adapt to the driving style you adopt when you put in in tiptronic mode and shift manually.

After I've been driving it hard in tippy (even for a short period - around 1/2 hour), immediatly after it will shift at around 4K+ in auto for a while.

the differences between a cold and a warm shift is the computer lets it rev out just a little bit more when cold because it is idling and opening higher than when car is warm

i dont think its a problem

3k isnt really hi revs

Use your triptronic on manual to force a gear change @ lower revs.

I find that mine quickly gets the idea after a couple of changes that funs over and I want to be back in fuel conservation mode.

guys i dont think its a problem my TH used to rev 3 half rpm in the mornings i gave it a little toe but it always shifted at about 29 rpm or 3rpm normaly and my new TJ advance does the exact same thing i just think there geared taller than other cars. The 3.0l are geared a bit lower 2 half rpm.

It definately learns quickly...for a week ive been driving like a granny its been changing at 3krpm....then when I give it a flogging at the lights....it will shift at 5K when accelerator is flat stick....normally it would rev out to 6K......its learnt to be more economical now :D

Yeh the Magna auto's feel weird... Im used to it now but they are just weird... Dont feel right at all.

I hate the way they over rev at low speeds, drove my dad crazy in his car, now he uses tiptronic to change down low where he likes it.

Guys, thanks for your advice, much appreciated. Had Mitsu dealer take my car for a quick trip around the block yesterday & he says the revving is totally normal. Gentle acceleration will result in a quicker shift, moderate/heavy acceleration will result in the car holding the revs a bit longer, for better pickup off the mark. He also said when engine cold, it holds revs longer regardless as one of you guys said. All good. Thanks again folks!

Onw word mate-Torque converter!!! these ****ers go quite often and mitsubishi cant fix em because there attached to the spline! if this turns out to be the problem expect to shell out $2000+

Verada, cause the magna couldnt cut it!

  at veradapimp

its not a torque converter problem at all the autos adapt to persons driving, with my car it sometimes gets driven by my parents and its pretty noticable that it has adapted to their style and after a few mins it adjusts back to my driving style.

And verada is exactly the same as a magna so

5k with fully open throttle? wow thats different! hehe, not a bad thing. I've reset my ECU heaps, and it has never changed into 2nd with open throttle under 5500pm, its usually always 5600, and if its been driven enthusiastically for a while it will slightly increase, but hasnt ever shifted after 6000.
