As articuno pointed out to me on the cruise last sunday, i have 3-4 dead leds in my rear spoiler brake light. Was just wondering, is it possible to remove the dead led's and replace them with new ones, or would i have to source a new brake light?
Thanks :).

You must be able too.. But i reckon you wouldnt be able to just pull them out like globes. they would be soldered in i guess.. :D

Do some investergating.. :D

Soldered in.

You can remove the board, the problem is getting LED's that will match in brightness and colour. On the 3rd gens, you can remove the whole board easily, not sure in second gens (would assume so).

You would be better to unsolder and replace all of them, as the voltage drop across each could be different (the voltage drop on some of the newer high brightness red leds is less than the old).

Also gives you a chance to put some brighter ones in - they do lose emission over time as well...

lol that's harsh...but true :(.

Anyway it's not a stock spoiler so being a 2nd gen means nothing, i'll have to pull it out and see. Just didn't wanna dismantle it only to find i've fudged up a brake light :P.

Time to source a New Brake LED strip, they are not cheap...
There are Two types I believe ones that are clear behind Red plastic and Clear ones that light up red...

I have seen one guy Wire up a Neon tube and attached it under his wing when his LED blew out, but not sure on the Legality side of things..

yeah yeah the parcel shelf one is tip top, just the spolier was really loose, so when my nannu and ad fixed it up, they just didnt re-connect it, im gonna get a new spolier next year anyway so no need

Leigh, those LED's shouldn't have packed in so soon... that's concerning and a pain in the butt... AFAIK all mine are still working after years of heavy driving. I would either replace the strip if possible with a higher quality replacement or just accept that it is happening and try to ignore it. Sounds like they did a cheapy.

Hope you find a simple solution.

Yeh mate that's exactly what i was thinking, i'm going to replace all of them, just gotta work out how bright they are and go for the same brightness, because they are bright, they light up anything behind me thats white :D. Will have to do it tomorrow if i get a chance :).

Also Tuff TR, if you do get another spoiler that has an LED brake light, i'm pretty sure you'll have to disconnect your parcel shelf one, i'm not exactly sure but i think you are only allowed one high mid mounted brake light.

I love pre '89 cars... I don't have this problem

However, for LEDs to fail, signifies poor quality, you might be wise to replace them all.

The problem has fixed itself lol :).

Sounds like dry joints. If you get a chance, you should run a soldering iron + some fresh solder over the joints.

Cheers
