Hey guys, new to the forum here, just bought my first car, a 95 magna with 130,000k`s on it, cost 6k

prob is, i have no idea what model it is

Also, are the 2nd gen grilles swappable with each other? id like to change my ugly grille for something a little nicer because i dont want to paint it, possibly a diamante grille

Welcome,
umm thats TS, and if i was you, get a TR grille...they look alot nicer, reffer to my car on "post ur ride"......6K:|......holy crap thats alot for a TS

SideWinder
29-06-2005, 03:38 PM
yes i wouldnt mind a grille like yours

6k is pretty much the going rate up here in townsville for a 2nd gen in good nick...anything cheaper seems to always have noisy tappets etc..

so i take it i can easily take out my grille and replace it with a TR? where would i buy them?

also how hard would colour coded bumpers be to find?

Yup it's a TS, one of the very latest TS's with the kickarse rear boot garnish. Personally i'd keep your current grille and just colour code it. While you are there colour code your bumpers too. The first mod i'd be doing :D. Also take off that damn black crap off ur rear window :P.

Im not too keen on painting it myself, a paint and panel place could do it? how much am I looking at?

im definatly taking the rear window shade off as im a bit on the short side and its hinders my vision in the rear view mirror

whats a boot garnish?

M4DDOG
29-06-2005, 04:19 PM
Depending on the place i'd say anywhere between $100- $400. Would be alot cheaper if you did it yourself though :P. Or get someone from the forums to do it who does painting :).
Boot garnish is the area on your boot lid that holds your license plate etc. You have the one with the chrome mistubishi lettering, looks awesome, if you drive past a TR or older TS you'll know what i'm talking about :D.

SideWinder

thought that mighta been what the boot garnish was :P im really, really incompetent with paints, and so far ive only seen one other townsville member on these forums so i doubt anyone here could do it, think i might try my luck with the yellow pages. can really do anything until i get a full time job though...still finishing high school

Sidewinder... that is a damn neat looking 2nd gen from what I can see...

Consider my advice... don't be too quick to mod... save your money and do a shmick job of things when you have the money to... don't mod yourself into poverty.. you have a nice ride there just enjoy driving it for a while... give you a chance to think about what you could potentially do with it down the track, but if you are rolling in money mod away! lol

You mentioned noisy tappets on some of the cars you saw... this is a big general assumption and question to anyone...and I know that any car can do it, but I am curious, is it predominantly the 4 bangers that tend to sound like tractors in their vintage years? as I have seen/heard very few second gens with the 3.0 engine with similar sounding noisy tappets.

Sidewinder... sure, I am assuming you have a 3.0 litre??

(i know much less about the older generations)

p.s. Welcome to Aussie Magna by the way :D

gday mate, ur ts looks in very good condition! and the reason why u hear the 4cyls like tractors is coz of the timing chain, tensioners get loose and then the chain rattles to the sh*ts

and either keep the TS grille u got or get the KS verada grille instead, trust me u'd love it

Those are my old pics when i first got the car. Didn't have the rear spoiler, colour coded grill or cd player. Have new pics (the one i just posted being one of them) but havn't got around to uploading them.

I don't think i have posted in the ride thread now that i think about it. But i think i will wait until i get some vrx rims and an exhaust, then she will be complete

SideWinder
29-06-2005, 10:14 PM
well the first thing im going to do is replace the absolute crapheap of a tapedeck sitting in it and the 2 useless in dash speakers...thats all it has :S

later on ill do all the colour coding, and get some seat covers for front and rear..thats pretty much all i want to do cosmetically..possibly some new rims and slight lowering, but i dont mind the factory mags on there atm

im also planning some exaust mods..i dont care about performance, i just want it to sound nice...ricey i know but meh

Yeh that's very neat mate, are you gonna colour code the grey side bits too? I woulda either painted those too or left the grey top edgeing around the bumper (like on the SE's).

I dont mind the factory mags, they look prestige. If going for a nice sounding car, just go to a muffler place and ask for a generic high flow muffler for your car, should cost you around $110 installed. Will sound very nice :).

SideWinder
29-06-2005, 10:50 PM
yeah ive decided to keep my factory rims, they look so nice on cobras car

would that muffler give off a nice throaty sound?

Keep them and leave new rims til last, yes that muffler will sound nice and beefy. It wont so much be louder (like a cannon *shudders*) but will definately be alot deeper.

Just gona go for 17inch vrx rims, hopefully in a the next month or two as i have found an SA member who wants to sell his soon.

cobra where did you get your spoiler? and i have the exact same mags

The spoiler i got from a wreckers here in adelaide, but the name eludes me atm sorry. It was hard to get though as most wreckers wouldn't sell it seperate if it was still attached to the boot. You had to take the boot and spoiler or nothing at all.
Mine actually came with holes already in the boot but for some strange reason the spoiler had been taken off and holes covered with tape

I hinted to the crash repairer (ex gf's dad) that i would like the side strips colour coded aswell but he said it was a ***** of a job (taking them of and on) and didn't really want to do it. Couldn't force the issue since i was getting the other stuff done pretty cheap.

What!?
It's not hard at all, just tape/newspaper up the top and bottom of the side of your car, leaving only the grey bit reveiled, plastic primer, paint, clear coat...DONE! Not hard at all...

wats wrong with having L plates on the outside :P i got a magnet 1 right behind my rear number plate, and my front 1 is occasionally screwed onto my number plate so it wont fall off.. plus i had those static type L plates and they keep on falling off now

at least i dont go overboard and stick an L plate anywhere i can on the car lol

Oh, and you're not the only one to pay 6k for teh magna. I shelled out $6,700 for mine, with 120,000 on the books. One pays for the k's eh!

Oh, and get rid of that L plate. It's a magna, not a bloody fridge. Put some rainbow coloured alphabet letters on the back and stick up a few kiddie drawings while you're at it :D

I was only getting the front of the car and the rear bumper and spoiler painted. And that would be the dodgy home job way of doing it, a professional would not do it that way and i wouldn't want it done that way.

Not on this car anyway, i did do a couple of dodge paint jobs on my first car but that car needed a full respray eventually anyway.

Get the paint code from your VIN plate in your engine bay, then go to an auto parts store that makes paint and get it made up...or you can just see if it's available pre-made. They're almost always VERY close, so close I doubt you'd be able to tell. I've never had a problem with them for painting stuff on my car.

Yeah you could easily do the rear spoiler by yourself since its not on the car. Just sand back and start again if you stuff up.
Be careful matching the paint if you have the metalic paint like mine does. Im not even sure if you can buy it pre mixed coz when they did mine they actually had to add the metalic flecks/glitter/whatever its called to the paint. Took them a few trys to get the right ratio to match the rest of the car before they started painting.

well, this is boosted the likelyhood of me colour coding my bumpers by about 50% :P not sure if ill go on and do the exaust though...folks will look at me strange if i rice it up since it used to be their car

Easy fix,
Go to a mates house, grab a screw driver or drill, make a nice hole in the bottom of your muffler, drive home and say you hit a bump in the road and it put a hole in your muffler. TEll them you need a new muffler, Go get a generic high flow (will be louder than stock, but not so much louder, just a deeper tone) But they'll be comparing it to the muffler with a hole, so it will sound normal :).

Haha i was just thinkin that the other day :P

better yet i could try making it rust..dads a boilermaker and hed prolly try and fix the hole himself

..or i could do the obvious and tell them i plan to do the car up a little, nothing over the top but a little. they already know about my plans for audio, didnt phase them...and dad somehow managed to rice up a eh holden :S so they should see where my urges are coming from :P
