Just throwing round a few ideas....

What is the biggest tyre size you can fit on a TP SE? would 16's fit and also how wide - i would like to be able to use the power this thing has in the wet but i cant coz it just keeps spinning...

Which brings me to my next point - how do you make them handle better? mine wallows and generally farts around corners and i would like it tightened up somewhat (i do about 600 k's a week over all sorts of surfaces including Tassies "wonderful" black ribbon and a fair bit of dirt driving, im also a softie who wants to enjoy driving the car when im not hammering it so something in the middle would be good. Oh and i also tow with it just a little caravan though, about 1.5t)

tyre size im sure u could sqeeze 20" but you wouldnt be able to drive it lol also remember most states only allow you to have no more then 2" bigger from stock

as for handling, i put in new monroe shockers and lowered whiteline springs and this made quite the improvment next is a sway bar these are ment to be good on fwd as they stop the back end of the car swaying as u go around corners

from memory of a very old post the biggest someone fitted was 19" x 8" wide.

thats just stupid on a gen1 the biggest that i would go would be 17 MAYBE 18s anything bigger and it will look crap and youll have to fork out more for mags and tires then the cars worth theres hardly any gen1s that are even worth 2300 these days..

EDIT: I only paid $1150 for the whole thing!

Well i was thinking 16's tops - it was more width that i was concerned about. And your right - i do a lot of dirt road k's so high cost rims are not on the agenda. what width can you get 255?

Have you any idea of how much your suspension was - even a ball park figure will do. Whats it drive like normally? Did you do it yourself? Is it hard(as in to install)?

if your doing dirt driving, you DONT want fat road tyres ;)

also you dont wanna be dropping it to the ground if u do dirt road driving.
i had a stock wagon on dirt road, and its decent to some crazy 4x4 driving, and trust me, i wish the car was jacked up, coz man did it bottom out.
lucky its getting half stripped.

And I had a stationwagon that was nearly stock height (excluding sagging) and it bashed the bejeezus out of the undercarriage over some dirt sections. Was great over others though.

doesnt take much to bottom out a 1st gen tho, going around a corner at a medium pace, hit a small bump, and it bottoms out.

Pisses me right off, and gives the girlfriend a scared look lol

i spent around $800 but that included new bumpstops for the front the back stock ones where still ok so i just reused them,

driving normally.. its ALOT harder like i do miss how smooth it used to ride i also installed the shockers and springs at different times 1st i did the shockers and it made the best improvment as my old shockers where dead so it didnt bottom out it also didnt flot around much and it made it a nice smooth drive then i installed the springs and thats when handling really kicked in but i lost the smooth ride to it but it was worth it makes it like a gocart
the main reason why i threw in new springs was the shockers jacked the whole car up an inch and a car looks **** untill its lowered i also got the new springs to make it handle better and give less bodyroll

oh yer i installed it all my self if you know what your doing and have the right tools ill be right just take care when compressing the springs youll find the drivers ones the worst cos from stock mitsu make the front drivers spring stiffer for obvious reasons

also you could get a cheaper setup then i did as i went for more pricey stuff so it would be better then cheaper stuff

well then you didnt have a very good setup then, if its bottoming out then either your shockers are ****ed or your springs are too soft
if your doing dirt driving its probally not best to go full out as once u hit a bumpy surfaces in my car it comes to the point where it can hurt you with all the bumps so i wouldnt advise a 'hard' setup on dirt, altho on the real roads i wouldnt go soft thats when u get bodyroll

well i was refering to the mu11 which had stock everything, so yeah id say all was abit worn.
but all the same, these cars arent exactly design for offroad.
if you lower from the stock ride height and go dirt road, ure gonna have problems, regardless of how stiff the car is..... which being real stiff i doubt can be a good thing all the same.

For the most part they are well graded roads so it shouldnt be too much of a problem. but how wide can you go? And why is it bad to go too wide?

well i took my car on some fair savage dirt roads last nite and was surprised how well it went it wasnt as harsh as i thought it would be.. the only issue i had was going over deap pockets in the road that u cant go around a few times it gave the mud flaps a good bend :P but there buggered any way they scrape going over speed humps unless i act like a dick and go over them one wheel at a time lol

u can go as wide as you want well as far as the rim can take but the wider u go the more chance of scraping the gards

scraping the guards isn't so bad, just get them rolled, but the wider you go the greater your chances of aqua-planing and i don't know about you but i wouldn't really be going dirt roads if its raining anyway. ditto about mudflaps getting a kicking on speed bumps, but if your car is that low you pretty much know about what you can and cannot do and dirt roads that are neglected are something a low car isn't supposed to be on. I'd say get a good quality shock, new stock springs, some urethane bushes and a brace and swaybar to tighten the package up, you wont be as tight as a race car but you'll have a nice ride and better clearance and hopefully with the swaybar and brace - your front towers wont flex to buggery and your bum will keep nicely in toe. (READ: whilst hammering it otherwise the last two wont do squat) remember the alloys on the mags were 15" so the biggest you can go before either being illegal or getting a mod plate is 17". 7" is the widest also (in qld i've been told) but few rims at 17 are wider, taller you go - wider you go - thinner you go (in profile) the more poor you get.

my suggestion, 16" wheels at 16x6 with 205/50/16 tyres, cheap and effective

205/50/16's or 205/55/15's are definately enough for a stock 1st gen. the toyo TPG's that ive bought are great. ill recommend them to anyone looking for newish tyres. the grip is awesome. $140 per tyre though... the width of the tyre isnt everything wen u want grip... its compound (ie type of tyre etc)
