yo people, just after some opinions here. I have a TL wagon and wanna put a rear cargo blind over the back when i get a sub so some little snot bag doesnt walk past, see it and decide he wants it. However i was thinking that this was gonna interupt the sound coming from my rear 6x9's that are mounted in the tail gate. The cargo blind would cover these and the sound would probably bounce around a bit under the blind, especially against the bass from the sub, making some pretty ordinary sound.

Is all of that correct? or would the cargo blind make no difference. If it is correct then how hard would it be to mount those 6x9's in the rear doors? is there enough room or would there need to be some serious modification to the door skin?

YOU AGAIN :bowrofl: Ummm what do you have in the front speaker wise?

It is a good idea to HP the 6x9's at 100+Hz not to cause phase issues with the subs. They are only really there for people in the back. Maybe even mount them on your sub box. Cargo blind shouldn't effect the sound to much. Your bass will still be booming with a sub :D

saw the title... let me start by stating that i f*cking HATE opinionated people lol

also... dunno about sound quality... if some lil sh!tes not gonna flog it... it may be worth sacrificeing the few dB's that you may lose

umm yeah shoulda probably told you what i already had and plan to get

currently have 2-way 140w 6.5" fronts.. will be replaced with some splits

currently have 3-way 250w 6x9 rears which i plan to keep

no amp at this stage but plan on getting an amp to run ^^ that and another amp to run a 12" sub. Not gonna go all out and get 2 subs or 1 crazy big sub.. im not after a massive system just after a good system with an emphasis on sound quality over volume.

also i need the sub to be removable for the times when i need to make full use out of my wagons cargo space (ie camping, carrying mountain bike, etc)

and yes its me again trying to get ideas :P

Yes it will affect the treble from the rears. But will not affect the bass or midbass.

I think you'll be fine considering it's just rear fill.

If you want good sound, best bet is to put a lot of emphasis on your front splits (Morel, Dynaudio, Focal, Diamond, Boston) Depending on budget. Some decent power to drive them Quantity over quality here (as long as its a reputable brand. Alpine, Phoenix Gold, etc) as this will see better results for your money.

And most importantly... Door preparation.
Sound deadener, MDF baffles acoustic tiles etc = Money well spent if you're after some high fidelity.

Rears will be fine off the headunit, consider a 4 channel amp to run sub+splits. 4x100 w rms would be a good figure to start at.

Peace

Tim

No difference, I have 2-12" JL subs and Focal 6.5" co-axials in the rear tailgate and added the cargo blind for the same reason you want to (security) but also cos my amps have a neon backlit perspex panel and without the blind the whole rear of the car glowed in the dark!

I can't say I can tell any difference if the cargo blind is across or not.

The only thing I have had to do is silicone the tailgate inner panel to the tailgate due to rattles and vibrations!

Dude im gunna buy you a beer one day cause I think you are the funniest dude.

If SQ is your ticket then as tim said look for Splits of decent quality, around $300-350, combined with prepared doors should make for awsome sound. Sub, why not look at say a Boston G2 12inch, will work excellent in a 0.9-1cuft sealed box. That is like a full school bag size. Easy.

Amps look into the Audisons, SRx4 or SRx3 will work nice, on more of budget look at the Coustic 8000q or Jaycar 4x 100WRMS. :D Giving you good ideas?

What music do you like best?

Oh and with regards the removability, my sub-box is strapped down to the luggage eyes with a camping-ratchet strap so is removeable in about 2-minutes. The amps have been mounted on the vertical walls at each side of the boot between the wheel arches and the rear door.

Ha no comment to that one, but yeah i fell from 2meters when climbing up a cupboard when i was 2 or 3, I was never the same. lol

Hmmm see if you can audition some Boston FS-60 or the new Boston S splits, also try the Hertz HSK 165's and see if they will suit your tastes. I listen to Linkin Park, Frenzal Rhomb, Millencolin etc on my Bostons ( FS-60's ) and they love the fast attack. Also listen to techno and R&B + Hiphop on them so they are a good aggresive speaker. Hertz gets praise from 95% of those who buy them so they must be good. You can get all of them for around $300.

Where are you located?

The only place up there I would recommend is Maroochy Car Sound on the corner of Maud St. and Comstar Ave Maroochydoor if you didnt want to install it yourself. They sell Hertz gear up there, maybe you can look at the HSK-165 splits and the HX300 sub? How much you want to spend all up dude?

Have a look to as well to see what Marty has on special... dam it he has Audison SRx amps on sale.... you know I want a SRx2s.... noooooo lol

See what you can get off Marty, if you want stages then yeah Front splits + 2 channel amp is the way to go. Maybe see if you can get the FS-60's for cheaper since they are being replaced and an Audison SRx2, 65WRMSx 2 ( as i said on speacial ) might just be $500-540 from Marty although can not talk on his behalf, drop him a PM for prices, he will hook you up. Then look for an extra $150 for deadening of the front doors, you wont regret doing that. :D

Can you install them yourself?

RJL25

umm speakers i could install myself.. amp and sound deadening etc no :doubt:

ill get onto that marty dude when i got my money together

what speakers are down the back already ???
I know you said a 3-way but from what company ??

Poita
01-07-2005, 12:27 PM
thats what Im doing... taking it slowly in stages. Its a good idea and you can get what you really want instead of only being half satisfied for the life of the system.

Ive got Morels and a Jaycay 2x150 for the front. These cost me <$500 together.
Got some VDO 3-way 6x9s for the back for free off my bro.

Next on the shopping list is deadening for the doors.
Then sub and another 2x150W amp.

I have the MDF for the front baffles but havent got around to making them yet... need to though, once the volume gets up they rattle like anything.

So yeah, save for 1 thing at a time and get what you REALLY want. You will enjoy it much more in the long run.
Cheers
Pete

Good start for the rear fill, just have to work on the fronts then :D

Putting deadening and amps in are fun... just have to do it once. lol

ok just looked at my box for my 6x9's, they are Alpine SPS-690A's, what would you think if i added some alpine SPS-171A front speakers, alpine SWS-1242D sub and 2 Alpine MRV-F345 amps to power the system?

Also i would LOVE to add an Eclipse E7703AVX head unit in place of my current clarion mp3 player.. add the rear view camera and sat nav... drewl.. but price will probably get the better of me there.

Note it will take me forever to get the money to afford this system.. especially with a quality boot install

Any reason why so much Alpine? Have you had a listen to any other brands? They might take ur fancy. Especially in terms of speaker choice

It's hard for any company to do everything well. Alpine make good speakers, their top of the range gear is excellent. But their middle range collection is beaten by a lot of other brands in value for money and overall sound quality.

Question is are you after a setup that sounds good or looks good. (eg whole alpine setup)

Got to some specialist stores and have a listen.

Peace

yeah i forgot to add on the bottom of my post that i chose mainly alpine cos for some (probably pointless) reason i like the continuity of all the one brand, especially with boot installs it just makes everything look a bit neater. Plus my mate has that same sub as i mentioned and as far as volume and quality goes, its exactly what im after. The reason i chose the alpine brand is cos i already have some of their type S 6x9's and im very happy with them.

But please if you have other suggestions (or just think im being silly) then please fire away, hence the name of the thread :)

Cool, lotsa people do the same thing esp after they see show cars...

For Alpine I recommend their headunits and amps. Especially their older v12 series.

For speakers have a look at Dynaudio, focal, morel, diamond and even Vibe (I havent heard personally but have heard good things)

A lot of these guys are very exxy but their cheaper end has a much higher build quality. If you can muster up $350 for splits you would be very happy.

I installed a set of Alpine Type S Splits into a VR Commodore last week, they go hard for the Money and Sound Excellent.. They will suit your needs down to the ground without the need to spend a whole heap of Dough..

I
I would suggest as Tim has done and go and try them before you buy them, you may find that Hertz or Focal or Eclipse may suit your needs
( Vibe Splits sound Very Bright and have a Nice Powerfull sound to them aswell as looking unique)
If you want to keep with the Alpine thing, Demo a Set of Type R splits and then compare them to the Type S and let your Ears be the judge

one of the reasons i went with Alpine for my subs and amp is availability. Im sure boston, hertz, dynaudio, etc have good products, but i like to be able to go to a shop, listen to different setups, discuss options with the guy, and bargain down on price. I live in Brisbane and about the only place i know that stocks good brands where you can still get a good deal by bargaining, is Northfield, who stock mainly Alpine, Eclipse and Clarion.
So buying stuff off FHRX might sound good and be better value for money, but what happens if a product stuffs up, it would just be a pain in the ass to get the stuff shipped back and forth, plus bargaining by way of email is hardly the same. Its the case up here at last that very few actual shop sell the quality brands that the average joe has never even heard of (boston, dynaudio, etc).

Perhaps Alpine are expensive when you look at RRP, but on average i have paid about 70% of RRP on all my stuff i have bought from Northfield. Ie, 2 x SWS1222 subs (220RRP each) + box + Alpine MRD-M301 monoblock (599RRP) for $800 total.

RJL - pretty sure you will still be able to get the SWS1242 sub packaged with the MRD-M301 for $599. Or even getting that sub and buying a 4 channel amp to run fronts and sub will be ok. That sub can still run fine with little power.

RJL25
04-07-2005, 11:49 AM
Tim-E i agree with it being easier to bargain with someone at a shop as opposed to someone online or over email or whatever.. i mean yeah you may pay less from the other bloke but with the store you can also bargain with installation and after you've got that price down you probably pay less at the end of the day anyway. Plus theres someone nearbye i can rock up to if somethings not workin and say OI!

But... what's the point in getting cheap stuff if it doesnt sound good??? If you want cheap, go Jaycar splits.

They'll do the job and ul save a pretty penny. Depends what you want.

Commercial brands have a rrp that is already overpriced, they drop it down straight away and u think ur getting a great deal...

Like the Pioneer yellow cones, they cost a fortune but are really nothing special.

magnat
04-07-2005, 12:01 PM
Define what you Call cheap??
If it does the job and sounds great while doing it, who cares about how expensive it is...

If you call Alpine Type S cheap, then what would you call a Set of Boss Split???

As long as He is Happy with Alpine then there should be no reason to go to a more expenisve brand to achieve the same goal....

RJL25
04-07-2005, 12:10 PM
yeah thats basically it ay, i dont see how trying to get a good price is going to be detrimental to sound quality... its about how good the speakers are, not how expensive/cheap they are.

Its not like im after a full competition spec system here, im just going for a good quality system that will be in a car that will be my daily driver.. i dont know about you but i dont have my stereo at full noise all day every day while im drivin around... i value my ear drums so going for uber good 600 buks splits is completely pointless for my needs
