G'day All, I am new to the AMC.
I have a TJ Magna Sedan i've had since new.I have recently bought a JVC KD-G416 CD/mp3 player.I finally got the sh*ts with my 3rd standard stereo replaced under new car warranty, so i decided to upgrade.
I have not as yet bought any speakers and was wondering if anyone could suggest what i could buy that would sound great, but still utilise the existing speaker holes. I am considering perhaps buying a small sub, but then i'd imagine i'd need an amp to go with it.
Also, are those little plug thingys on top of the dash sockets where tweeters would live if only it was a more up market model than my executive?
I dont want to spen $1000 ' s of dollars on a sound system, but would spend upto say $1000 for some speakers and potentially an amp.
Some advice would be greatly appreciated.
I live in Jervis Bay, so my choice of shops is limited which is why i bought my head unit off ebay (plus it was heaps cheaper than retail) :D

Nowra Hifi is your Nearest port of Call for Car audio.. I think they sell Alpine and Clarion ??
Pop in and see them and see what they can offer you..
Alpine Types S 6x9's and Type S 6.5 inch Splits would sound Great, but not sure of how much of your Budget you would have left ..
Welcome to AMC... You are 45 mins or So away from me, I live in the Southern Highlands...Just through Kangaroo Valley and Up the road abit...

Welcome to the forums mate!
The holes on top of the dash are only for the midrange speakers in the Ralliarts afaik. The Verada's etc, place their tweeters in the delta panel. (The black triangle cover near the side mirror) You can order the cover part for this from Mitsu for $36 for two to fit aftermarket tweeters. Alternatively consider mounting them in the kickpanels/lower doors for the best fidelity (Tweeter is further from your ears so the sound will come from a more central point instead of from the right side.)
In terms of audio I would recommend getting out there and having a listen. You can do what many people do and go to JB/autobarn/Strathfield. And get ripped off with cheap components. Or you can find a specialist store and listen to some real car audio.
Brands I would recommend (if not to buy then at least to audition... ) Dynaudio, Morel, Diamond, Hertz, Focal and Boston.
To avoid you wasting your money with upgrades it's a good idea to have a plan from the start. Now since you listen to ur music and you drive your car from the front seat and your ears face forward the most important aspect will be the front splits. You want to put as much money into here as possible.
If you want to get a sub it will be money wasted upgrading the rear 6x9's. Money would be better spent on front splits/amp/door preparation to stop rattles. If you want a sub then this gives you many more options. I would suggest getting a 4 channel amp. Bridging two channels for the sub and running the front splits off the other two. This saves money on wiring for two amps and usually means you can get some nice power. 4x100 w rms is plenty.
So I recommend:
Leaving the rears and running these off the headunit (consider purchasing a cap to remove the sub frequencies which will interefere with your sub and also distort with too much volume.)
Investing as much money as possible in splits that sound good to you.
Buying the biggest amp ur budget will afford as this will provide you with the most headunit (ur system wont be struggling)
And a small 10" or 12" sub in a small sealed box.
Peace
Tim

What exactly do you guys mena by splits?
Apologies, i'm alittle unsoar of the lingo. I used to have big F*ckers (7 x 10) kenwood 3 ways in a falcon, but i want more clarity now! I have never had tweeters............Time for a change!

Coaxial speakers is what you are prob used to. These Are all incorporated in the one unit. Split systems have separate tweeters that are usually mounted on axis.

I can't believe some car manufactures classify coaxials as two or more speakers, that's so dame decieving, i can't stand it

Splits or Component Speakers are More expensive, Better sounding and involve a Tweeter with Seperate Woofer and a Cross Over to Cancel the Bass signals reaching the Tweeter.
a Co Axial speaker, like your Huge 7x10's have a Woofer , Tweeter and Midrange speaker mounted directly over the centre of the Woofer, using simple Caps to filter out signals..
7x10's will not fit to well down the Back of your Magna.. Best Choice is a 6x9 and a 6.5 inch Split.. Most people will tell you not to bother with rears, but judging from your last choice in Speakers SQ is not your main concern..
I would Look at getting the Alpine Type S Splits, thier 2-way Type S 6x9's and then save up for a nice Amp and Sub to accompany your High quality Speakers...

I looked at some s type ones before on ebay about $300 which is fine.
As i mentioned b4, the big 7 x 10 kenwoood 280w were good at the time, but not for clarity but more for volume. This time i'm gonna think it bit more, (hence joining a forum) and getting some advice from someone whos interests is not driven by sales (i.e a salesman).
i am strongly thinking of the 6 x 9 theory in the back, and the splits in the front.
Where did you mount the tweeters.....in the dash......or the doors?

for just over $300 you could get some Morel splits from fhrx new.
I just finished installing them and am very happy with them. In the same price bracket are Hertz, Boston and a couple others, PM him, he's great for advise and prices.
I mounted my tweeters in the kick panels

Mounting Tweeters on the Dash ( Where those Big Round 3inch cover plates are) causes reflections off the window.. Best Idea is to mount them directly above the woofer..
I have mine mounted Here ( See Photo) I am using Blu Tac as I do not want to cut holes in my trim so when I remove my system I won't have to leave everything in there..
It gives the front sound stage a nice lift so it doesn't sound like it is all firing into your legs..
So if a Chunky Brother is riding shot gun there is little deterioration in sound quality..
