I am about to upgrade my headunit to a Sony CDX F5710 or 7710 - but since my car has a power antenna I am a bit worried that the headunit may not "support" a power antenna - is this a possibility?

Any stereo that has a trigger to tell a amp to turn on then yes.. If it dont have a power antenna wire then use the amp trigger.. Does the same trick but antenna is always up when stereo is on.. if your listening to a cd then its still up.. u can put a switch on it like i did to lower the arial when listen to cd`s.. :D
Damn that magna arial is ugly where they are.. And they make them 5 foot hey.. Real ugly. :D

Guys if your headunit doesnt have an antenna output u need to make a relay using the remote lead to trigger it.
The remote lead is purely for a signal and should not be used to power anything.
It is suffice to run turn on 3 amps in a daisy chain fashion. But anymore and you may want to use a relay to turn on the amps.
You shouldnt use the remote out to trigger an antenna.
Given that I woulod be very surprised if the Sony doesnt have an electric antenna wire.
Just ask the guy who ur getting it off. Or google it.
Peace
Tim
