alternator bearings are stuffed making loud noise, this will be the third alternator to replace so far, so i'm thinking of getting an aftermarket one depending on price, any ideas/recommendations? i also have two amps, one is 600W and the other 800W, i have 6X9 300W and getting a sub soon,
i think it started making noise when i had the full system going with my brothers sub, could this have caused the problem?

Stinger do alterntors (really good ones) maybe these are worth looking at as they are made for larger stereos

yes the power being drawn from the stereo can result in the alternator stuffing up!! i'd be looking for a bigger alternator!

I would disagree, sounds like the belt is too tight (or if it screams first thing in the morning when you start it, belt is too loose)

If you have bearing problems, I could almost guarantee that it is belt tension issues! I have used altenators as welders - ie. dead short - run off a lawnmower engine - and killed the diodes :P but not the bearings.

If you have a voltage drop at the battery, ie. with full load and engine running, less than 13V, your alt is too small - options are stinger, but they are just a GM (IIRC) alt delta wound :o) Not rewound, just the way the phases are routed is changed to get a higher current (at the expense of lower voltage at idle)

I had a comp system that required two alt belts, no problems with bearings, but the schottky diodes would blow clean apart sometimes :)

The alt I built (with the help of an auto 'leccie) was based on an 80 amp Saab altenator, pushed to a conservative 160A.

If you want details I can grill him (the 'leccie) as he is my father-in-law.

Good to see someone knows what they are on about. heathyoung is right on the money. If you are having bearing issues check your belt tension.
ALso are these replacements re co units or just second hand units?

hey, my car engine screams if i gun it when i first start it up and turn the wheel. Could this be belt tension? how can i fix this?

Cheers,
Cam.

If it's a squeal pradaking then yer it's belt tension. More common is for power steering pump belts to do it (my Commy wagon does it if you gun the engine in neutral) but alternator belts can do it.

The Gregorys/Haynes will tell you how to check the belt tension by measuring the belt deflection and also how to adjust the tension. It's nearly always a 2 person job IME.

I don't have any knowledge of it but shouldn't multi-rib (ie vvvvv)belts have less tension than single V belts due to greater surface area on the multi-rib belt and hence easier to overtension? :?

reconditioned cost me $140 , got it early last year, it started having problems when i got a new amp and sub, dont have the sub nemore and the amp is not being used, but problem is still there

I would say then you got a fairly poor reco one as many of us have the sound gear running of std units with no problems or as previously posted you also haev a problem with belt over tension and the sound system has had nothing to do with it
