View Full Version : Manual conversion - do we need to change ECU?

Does anyone have any info on wether you actually have to change the ECU when doing a manual conversion?
there are two schools of thought here - asylum had to change his over anyway because his ecu was dead to start with.
I remember someone (a long long time ago) saying they did a manual conversion and kept the original AT ECU.
Im thinking, since the manual box only has connectors for a reverse signal, and also a speed sensor if i couldnt just re-wire these up from the original AT loom, and just leave the rest disconnected.
Does anyone know what happens if you start up the engine with the Automatic disconnected - ie. will it just go into error mode and shut down or something?
what about the tcl ecu?
ive got a good chunk of the bits to start this conversion and am going to bite the bullet soon (ie next week pretty much as long as i get all the bits i need) so any real info on the ECU's would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

ring up Mitsubishi or Repco or some other place and find out the part number for the ECU for auto and manual if the part no. is the same then u dnt need 2 change it.

I think that was Rhino. He kept the auto ECU and had a Wolf3D spliced into it.

Ahh.. is the wolf3d similar to the greddy in that it changes air/fuel ratios and ignition timing?
because i have a greddy installed - maybe this would override any cripple mode the ECU puts itself in when i disconnect the trans?!

heres hoping :)

im very interested in this information as well, as i am going to start my way on converting my Auto to Manual. Would a piggyback ECU work in that kind of case?

OKAY so far after checking out circuit diagrams and talking to rhino it appears you can still keep the auto ecu.
It seems that he experiences a flat spot at 6grand, although he thinks that this would be over ridden with an aftermarket piggyback ecu (like greddy or wolf3d).
Since i have the bits, and also have a greddy, ill soon let ya's all know :)
my car also has traction control and tiptronic, cruise etc so ill keep you all informed of the progress - hopefully the traction control wont throw too much of a spanner in the works (i know it wont work - but i dont know if it will disable stuff)

wish me luck.

Hahaha... that flat spot was the rev limiter for an auto :bowrofl:

I asked him that and he said it wasnt? anyway - mine rev limits at about 6700 or 7000 so it shouldnt bother me too much if thats what it is - thats past the peak power anyway :)

cheers tyson hope it all goes well :)
