View Full Version : Wireless TV??!??!?!
I was just thinking.......
would it be possible in any way for me to stream TV from my router or from some kind of wireless source??
By this i mean, like, somehow get a TV tuner, or something that can broadcast network TV thru my house so i can watch TV on my laptop wirelessly.
umm...can i get a wireless tv tuner card to my laptop? PCMCIA? something i don't need to plug into the wall?

Yes and yes. :D
If you've got another PC in the house you can put a TV tuner card into it and use one of the many pieces of software available to transmit it over the network to your laptop.
You can also buy USB based TV tuners/capture cards (including Digital and HDTV version) that you can hook up to your laptop.
Yeah, if you have a 802.11g network and have a computer setup to transcode the tuner card output in real time to something streamable with higher compression.
There are probably USB TV tuners available too. That would be the easier option, although you'd need the aerial hooked up too (a bit big at VHF freqs).
Edit: I see I have been beaten to the punch.

oh yes, i like this news.
so u're telling me, if i was to get a TV tuner for my desktop PC, which is also connected to the router, I can transmit TV wirelessly from that to my laptop via my router?
eeeeeexxcelleent. Problem is...there's no TV arial plug in the study:doh: reckon i could somehow bum the connection off the same plug as the one my cable modem's connected to? Same looking plug...but probably ain't connected to arial. lol
I'd rather choose to transmit it out from my desktop/router than have a USB thing hanging off my laptop.

Yes! (assuming your router is your wireless device, right? and your PC and Laptop can share files and stuff right now?)

The cable model one is out of the question lol But if you buy yourself a Digital TV tuner card (get HDTV capable for sure) you might find you can get away with either the aerial that comes with it, or just a pair of rabbit ears or something. The Digital transmissions are a whole lot more forgiving than analogue TV because basically it's either got enough signal to give you a perfect picture or you get bugger all - there's not much in between, and ghosting doesn't exist.
I suppose you want some choices for software and hardware now, right? lol

oh yeah, its wireless. Netgear WGTYKH something or other, 802.11g. Windoez XP desktop, and my laptop is a Powerbook G4....I can't see the XP machine's files on my mac, but i can see the mac's files on the XP machine....weird.
neyways, i'll be happy with a analogue TV tuner...might try it with a little desktop antenna. Would a digital tv tuner cost a whole lot more? also, desktop PC is a MSI...tiny tiny little case...

Bah you never mentioned the laptop was a Mac lol should still be ok though.
As for the tiny desktop - worst case will mean a USB gizmo hanging out the back if a normal card won't fit.
Hm... an interesting one

this is the pricelist for a cheapish PC shop near me

I can get all the stuff at a cheaper price anyway.....u reckon the 70 dollar thing would be ok? I don't need FM radio as the PC case is already a FM/AM/CD-RW/MP3/CD/DVD player anyway
edit: this second one looks appealing too

If the TV tuner software has a "transconvert into a more highly compressed stream and set up streaming server" button it'll be easy. Otherwise it might be a bit difficult, unless you are happy with recording shows first and watching them after. You'll need to stream them to watch them as they are being broadcast. It's definitely possible on Linux.
For seeing your WinXP shares on a Mac you might need a Samba client. I would have thought that MacOSX would have one.
smb//<ipaddress> stuff or whatever? doesn't work.
some ppl have told me its somethign to do with windows xp and its security/registration or something stupid like that.
also....could someone move this to 'general' or 'members lounge' plz?!

This was demonstrated to me yesterday:

However you will still need some sort of transcoder.
