MY god!
I dropped off my TE this morning with a few minor things to be done:
1. Gear box oild needs replacing (150,000km) - I would have done it myself but they use uber-cool oil, so I'll let them do it.
2. I've had a small coolant leak for a while from the water-pump region.
3. A bit of a belt noise (kind of squeaking) has developed lately.
Anyway, the guy rang me just then, quoted $690 to replace the water pump!!.. ($350ish for the pump and that again for labour).. I told him not to bother. I don't mind topping up the coolant each week or two.
Is that a reasonable price? This was a Mitsu dealer, so I assume I could get it a little cheaper at Joes Mechanic.

See if you can get something from a wrecker. Thats ludicrous
i think the problem is that they have to take the tension off of the timing belt and its a fair bit of work.. thats about the figure i would be expecting - and it is also why they recommend that you change your water pump when you get your timing belt replaced as they often start leaking when the belt is re-tensioned.
You can take it to joe mechanic but just remember that they will be loosening off the timing belt so take it somewhere who knows what they will be doing..

That's nothing, my 4 banger TE cost $750 to replace the water pump, and that was from a service station, no one else sells the damn things except for mitsu, you wont get it much cheaper dude, bite the bullet, it aint sweet.

The guy did say that if it's not leaking too much, I should just wait until I get the other belt replaced - labour will be less of a factor then.
For now I don't mind putting some coolant in each week, I just hope it doesn't completely die suddenly.

yeah mate just make sure that it doesnt all piss out one day - do you know where on the pump its leaking from?
if your car has 150,000 on it - you still have another 50,000 k's of travel b4 you need to replace the belt again.. what 1 1/2 - 2 years?
thats a lot of coolant and time and effort :)
try calling ultratune and see if they can do it cheaper.. they know what theyre doing at least..
good luck mate.

Its the same for alternators. I was qouted by Mits $524 for a new alternator
The cost of spare parts is the only thing I regret about being a Mits man, but other than that they sh@t all over the Holdens & Fords

Ok the pump is driven by the cam belt on all v6 magna's.
If it is very minor and you have no long trips to make you might be able to get away with it until summer but I would not leave it too long.
As for the price, what state are you in, I may be able to get a far better price, the KR V6 one is about $160.00 after market. Could not see that TE would be much more but at the same time I could not guarentee it.
WHile the belt is off for the sake of 70 or 80 bucks replace it anyway. same with cam seals and front main seal.
Either way a pump at full price is cheaper than a new engine if you roast it.

All in all it was a pretty resonable service.
They charged me $20 to change the gbox oil (I thought that was pretty good)
They found the leaking water pump, called me about it, I said leave it, so they charged me nothing for that.
And the belt sqeak is interesting:
The guy said there is a redundant idler wheel that the alternator belt runs over. Mitsubishi recommend it's removal because all it does is squeak. Anyway, the removed it and readjusted the belt for 1/2 hr labour.
The squeak is definately gone!
Total : $55 which I thought was pretty good.
Anyone else had this idler wheel removed? sounds pretty interesting that Mitsu recommend they remove it.
We also had a chat about why the water pump runs off the cam belt... he was saying that in theory, if you snapped any belt other than the cam belt, you could *technically* still drive the car. The water pump would still be running and the oil pump is driven directly off the crank. He said he wouldn't *like* to drive the car this way, but it should work.
We also figured that if you snap a cam belt you're screwed anyway, so no problem losing the water pump.
I also went and had a look at a TL, they had a VRX and the plain model. Both were pretty nice.. growing on me.
Lastly I talked to the spare parts guy about the VRX wheels... he quoted me $385 per rim (with the mitsu cap, spring & nuts).. damn, I don't have that much money. I said my car was a white TE and he said he'd seen a white TH getting around with the VRX rims and clear tail lights.. I guess he was talking about you, w1ll1am.
He also said no problem about needing a VRX VIN to get stuff, I think he was gunna do a dodgy just to get a sale.
A pretty informative trip to a mechanic I thought.

Dan, DO NOT get VRX rims! at least at that price, go and get some after market jobs!!! this is better as it is cheaper and unique.. you dont want to look like every other standard VRX do you?

Yeah, I know.
Don't worry, there is no way I'm spending that money (even if I had it)
If I can get them cheaply, I will.
It's just that I'd like to remain 'stock' in my own stupid-way.
Every clown and his dog can go and get CSA etc. rims (just look at the number of commondores with those 5 spoke ones) and be nothing special.
If I get the VRX rims, they are genuine Mitsu which makes me feel a little better.
(I don't know how to explain it, its just something crazy I'd like to do)
