Hey you've been quiet ;)

Check all your water levels for a start... and keep an eye on your temp guage while you are driving next. If you are running low on water this can happen, like if you have a split hose etc

Or it could be a dicky thermostat or temp gauge sender.

I am thinking the cooling system at this stage anyway... let us know how it goes.

I get that in my TM... i assume your TR is a 4cylinder too...

I'm not sure... i thought i sounded like it's coming from the radiator at first...

but then as soon as i switched off the motor... i put my head under the car... and i'm certian it was coming from the motor (the be precise, the sump) so now i'm thinking it's the oil doing something (dripping maybe?)

the car runs at the correct temp... and i had the motor reconditioned a year ago... so i dunno...

Well tonight after driving, with no problems with temp for a while.

I did some freeway driving & around the city for about an 1hour and half.

On the way home, about 15mins away, and the car was running very hot. Close to the maximium limit on the heat needle...

I stopped the car, let it rest for 30mins&added some water , then drove it home and it was fine.

It seems though something is not right now, although I am thinking this could be the reason, I ran out of coolant and have only been putting water in the radiator, would this be the reason?

Also does anyone know supercheapauto sell new reserve bottles and the tubes for a TR 4cyc?

thankyou in advance,
RuSSiaN

i think using coolant in your car is just an urban mith doesnt really matter what you use

nah mate im pretty sure super cheap dont stock em ( i work there) so you'd have to probably go wrekcers or something........maybe the tubes, depends what kind though, but keep this in mind, if SCA dont stock them and have to be ordered in, you'll be paying an arm and a leg for it, so good luck

ok, well you use water then.....I'm sticking to proper anti-freeze and anti-corosive coolant in my cars. I have seen too many engines, astrons in particular that have been completely stuffed in every alloy part including the head by corosion in the cooling system.
I live in a part of Oz where it regularly goes below -1deg at night, antifreeze is a must here if you don't want ice to crack the radiator or engine alloys.
I once saw an engine in a ford laser with water only, where overnight ice pushed the welch plugs out, it was cooked when it was driven the next day.

the proper radiator overflow bottle would only be available from a wreckers or a mitsu dealer spare parts dept. supercheap might sell a universal fit overflow bottle that doesn't really fit. lol

Cars used to spit water back into the over flow bottle when they had done a head gasket.. dont know about these magnas though..

I still have a sneaking suspicion you might have a leak that needs tending to in one of the hoses... what sort of condition are they in?... actually and the condition of the radiator... could be a crack or anything.

Reserve tank is handy but should not be relied upon.

I just got a new job in the city so I need the car to be trustworthy...

I changed the to big hoses on the radiator, but not sure why it is still overheating..

excuse the spelling to = *Two*

I am thinking it because i only have water in there, so now ill drive down to supercheap and get some more coolant, hopefully this helps...

I'll keep use updated.

you can try the coolant/antifreeze but I just wanted to say that there are more components to the cooling system than the two inlet and outlet hoses... could be a number of things... there are more hoses that carry the water that could be stuffed or the water pump is failing, thermostat, crack in the radiator etc... after you try the anti freeze I would still monitor it very closely... even getting into the habit of checking under the bonnet after a long drive and listening for noises or looking for steam, even the smell can give it away... but obviously don't open the radiator cap while it is hot to check the levels... had too many people I know burnt from that one.

Good luck!

Well drove it to the city(melbourne) about 40 mins away from me.

Stayed on half, went up a bit - then came back down about 3seconds later.

Did that twice on the way there and on the way back.

I get a funny smell comming from the engine after its been running....

Probably have to get it looked at yeah?

HyperTF i took some of your advice and have been monitoring the sound/visual aspect of the car.

(When the car was overheating)
I opened it the next morning and noticed a drip comming from the radiator hose(2 big ones).
Felt underneath coolant was leaking, replaced the hose, flushed coolant - replaced coolent.

Car has not overheated since, drove to the city & back no movement on temp gauge.
Get to test this out again tonight Friday for work.

Hopefully all goes well.

Gets alot of smoke in the cold, is this normal - its an older model car?

Time for a service comming up! & "wheel service" yay

Not really dude. Coolant is required to fight corrosion and also prevent freezing. Hu? Sorry, wrong country :)
It increases the cooling liquid's boiling point from 100 C to higher reading and prevent engine, well, to boil when getting really sick hot.

how do you flush the coolant?
i had a look under the car and cannot find the thing that you need unscrew in order to drain the radiator.

i had a look under the car and cannot find the thing that you need unscrew in order to drain the radiator. Depending on your car, and in particular, the radiator in it, there might not be a drain hole. In this case just pull the bottom radiator hose off.

i work in a radiator shop and we ran a test using water and coolant in seperate jars with therostat housings...in 1 week the housing with just water had started to corode away. the housing with coolant is still ok 3 months later...coolant is a must have as all cars these days have alloy heads....might want to goto a mechanic and have the head tested...seen it so many times but i hope for you sake its ok
