My TJ gearbox was getting a little weird in it's actions so I paid $230 for a service and flush. It's now 100% better.
Try that perhaps.

Yeah ours was doing this to me. Going up a hill with a medium size load at about 90ks in 2nd gear at about 4500rpm full throttle and usually it will shift to 3rd at 5000rpm on full throttle. But when it got to about 4500rpm it just all of a sudden just went into neutral and naturally at full throttle jumped up to 5500-6000rpm and gave me abit of a scare. The tranny fluid hasn't been changed for years so i was told that the oil filter is so clogged up that not enough oil was able to be circulated through the box. Being a electronic box it realises this and goes into neutral to save itself from doing any damage.

So $230 you say for a gearbox service.....might be worthwhile. Did you notice any difference in the smoothness of the box cause ours is quite clunky.

A HUGE difference

Make sure you get a flush along with the service. They pump new oil through the system (torque convertor and all) and don't stop until all the crap old oil is gone. Then clean your filters and fill her up with new oil. Might be cheaper for your model. I don't know if you have to use the special grade oil from Mitsu that the TJ's do.
