I pulled my calipers off the rotor today so i could spray them.
Cause im so dame smart i pumped the brake pedal while the calipers were off the rotor and as expeceted a piston has popped out on each of my front calipers..
What do i do now? It would seem to me that if i bleed the brake line and get all the pressure out ill be able to push the piston back in again. Is that all there is too it?
Nothings every simple is it :doubt:

:D have you ever change brakes before? undo the bleed nipple and push back the cylinder and tighten the nipple back up and pump the pedel (not started) untill it goes hard then bleed from the pass rear driver rear then pass front then driver front but pump the pedal at each caliper. do you get wat i mean.. :D

hey mate.. nah this is my first experience with brakes. (usually i leave this stuff to my mechanic, now i no why i do lol )
so basically i undo the bleed nipple on the problem calipers, push the piston straight back in and then do the bleed nipple back up.. THEN bleed the brake system as per normal?
doesnt sound to hard!
a mate of mine who has more idea than i do is coming over tommorow. i was just concerned i may have damaged seals or something, that need to be replaced, by letting the piston pop right out..?

Possible but unlikely. If they've just popped out, the seals should be fine. Just pop 'em back in and you should be fine.

Sweet!! Yeah the car only has 5,000kms on it (its new) so all the seals should be in very good condition..
Well, atleast the calipers look nice and red now!!!! :D
Cheers for your help guys....

Wow, 5,000, yeah she's hardly run in. Damn good find there dude.
I wouldn't know whether to paint my calipers red for tradition, or blue to match the car.

old story if you dont know how it works dont f#@& with it . if you dont do the job right how would you feel if you mow a 12 year old school girl because you get brake fade from not bleading the system properly . unless you went to tafe for 4 years you shouldnt touch anything to do with your brakes!!!

heh. While I agree with the sentiment, brakes are hardly rocket science dude. It doesn't take 4 years of TAFE to know what you're doing. Just be careful, double check everything, and take it for a careful test run right after. And if you're really clueless, have a cluefull mate do it with you or take it to a mechanic.

WTF it was a simple mistake, anyway he has a mate coming to fix the problem...

hard to believe some people are that stupid like i said ive seen it all backwarrds and even worn through pads down to piston through the rotor down to the cooling fins and then they drive in to workshop complaining that thers a noise not the fact that it wont stop

Hell I sprayed my Calipers whislt they were still on the Vehicle. I just Masked it all up and got none on the Rotors or anything like that .. I used " Chevy Orange" Engine paint so it looks like a Dull red but still very choice..
Clueless

Thats actually a very logical and fairly intelligent way to do it, anyway you would only want the side facing outwards being painted anyways
*takes mental note for future reference*

i've had to work on my brakes... (ie. tighten the handbrake, put new pads, replace the whole caliper, new brake lines, bleed brakes, etc) but brakes are just too simple to stuff up! like obviously if you got someone who's fiddled with them before, then things are easier... and they give you a heads up to what has to happen... (in my case, my dad's helped me... and i did auto cert 1 at school)
i dont think you need to go to tafe for 4 years to be able to work on your own car, or one of your mates cars... but you do need to have a little bit of sense and someone/something to guide ya to what your doing (even a gregories manual helps)...

what im getting at is.. in a work shop they have insurance so if they stuff up and you kill someone it comes back to us. if you do the job at home and then kill someone cause they are not working it will be your fault . i just know theres a lot of people out there that dont know the 1st thing about brakes . ive also seen people use tranny fluid in the brake system. u should see there face when you tell them that the whole braks sys will need overhauling because the tranny fluis has eaten all the rubbers in the system.

I guess it comes down to this:
A normal sensible person who has done mechanical work before but hasn't done brakes, should be able to work it out and do a good job without killing anyone. A clueless idiot should not attempt any mechanical work (especially brakes) without proper training and/or supervision. Ok, we all clear now?

Well this was my first experience with brakes.. BUT...
I have done heaps of other work on my car (put the coilovers in my last one, done normal servicing stuff ie changing spark plugs, oil etc, ive done tonnes of electrical work on cars Hell i have even assisted my mate in putting a new donk in his LJ Torana)
I understand enough about how the braking system works to do what i wanted to do. I just wasnt sure how to tackle the piston popping right out.
I did as suggested and everything is back together working 100% perfectly. I just got back from a 1.5hour drive and the brakes are working just like they did before i touched anything.. oh but they're red now :D

ha ha ha well i am 16 and i never dun nething to a car really and i managed to change rotors and brake pads you hardly need to go to tafe to do that. Still we managed to do exaclty what this threads about...i dun think i could fix it by maself all i remember was dad going s%#$ a lot and complaining about brake fluid everywhere
