I have a 1990 Carby Sedan and it has a problem, it's "running rich". Now I've been told that this means too much petrol, or oil is getting into it and therefore needs to be serviced. If this is true, can someone give me a tutorial on how I can fix this without having to pay mechanics to do a job like this?

ahh the thread returns and it works :D
if its runing rich it means the timing is out and ure carby is geting to much fuel.
you can tell if that is so if u can smell petrol upon use of the car from the exhaust.
and basically ure car just needs a tune up yes.
ive never done my own, so maybe someone else can help ya there.

Yeah, you know exactly what I'm talking about, good, good ;-) I was hoping it wasn't more than what I thought it was. Thanks for the quick reply!

Hehe, yeah i noticed that...

Umm...

Im pretty sure you have to adjust the mixture screw on the carby, get a workshop manual off ebay or something, it will be able to tell you more. I never kept my carby long enough to **** around with it.

Well, I got my car checked today, heh, it's ****ed...

-Rec. S/H Carby, Carby fitted is missing auto choke Assy. And the secondaries are not working
-Vehicle appears to need a major service
-Engine oil low and timing chain a little rattly/poss. low oil
-Motor blows moke on inital start up
-Water pump belt cracked
-Rec. Engine steam clean/dirty

Anyone know how much this is going to cost? I was quoted $550, but I'd be down right stupid to spend that amount to get the car running when the car itself is probably valued $200

thats not really much
im not sure about the cost for carbys but u can always get one from the wreckers
low oil? its like $25 for 5l but if you timing chain is on the way out that will cost upwards off 250 installed
blows smoke on start up? stem valve seals there like a $2 part but there a ***** to do and cost i bit for labour
water pump belt? i payed like $7 for one of thos last year
and really u can clean the engine bay your self for the costs of can of $2 degreaser

550 doesnt sound that bad maybe you could cut the labour down by buying and installing the water pump belt your self and cleaning the bay your self and top the oil your self...

everything uve typed are normal magna problems, normally theyd come 1 at a time, but you got all of em at once.
you have 2 options, get ure engine repaired, or buy a new one. lol both as easy.
the replacing more so.
ure carby could be rebuilt for 250$ thats all u described wrong with it.

Thanks again guys, been a great help. I'm going to my dads mechanic in about an hour to see what he thinks, he's been servicing our cars for quite some time and does a pretty good job apparently. I'll probably clean the engine myself, high-pressure hose haha ;-) Oil I often do, almost twice a month, quite rediculous really. I think Auto Tune are a bit rediculous recommending oil fill ups and stuff, ahh well, whatever. Thanks again guys!

I got my carby rebuild for about $100-$150... it is certianly worth it... the car starts in the morning (choke finially works properly), the secondarys work fine, it's running pretty much spot on... i've also notices a saving in fuel costs... like before my carby got done - approx 300 to a tank and the car was gutless... now it's more like 400km to a tank and lots more torque/power to haul you up any hill...

Cleaning the motor... just go crazy with some cans of degreaser and a toothbrush - comes up real good... just dont spray the battery, or down the throttle... so cover them up with a plastic bag, then wash away the degreaser with your garden hose and allow it to dry... do this when the motor is cold - cos cold water on hot head aint good...
if the car doesn't start or runs like it's running off 3 cylinders, just spray all the electrical connectors and the sparkplugs and end of hte leads with Inox or WD40... that'll get it working again

water pump belt is easy as... and the belt is cheap - someone on here can help you out if you wanna have a crack at replacing it...

mines still gutless uphills, but i can get 550km-600+km from a tank of PULP, which last time cost me $70

has your carby been overhauled? chances are the secondaries are seized...

pretty sure they work, as getting from 70-110, putting my foot to the floor on flat road, she moves.

Its just that LONG MT Ousley south of sydney thats my arch nemisis.

Short uphill where i can just ring her up there are no problem with the car fully loaded

(Side note, i am talking about the car fully loaded)

Well, I got the carby fixed the other day, put power steering fluid in today, put two new tyres up the front and now I just beat a 2nd gen off at the lights (clearly he wasnt trying, but before my car would be lucky to hit 80kmph) so im pretty happy at the moment, let's just see how it goes.

150kmph is easy in mine, but i havent gone past 170

id like to reach 210, but ill gladly sacrifice acceleration for top speed
