View Full Version : What issues have you had with your Gen 3?
Just asking peoples experiences on any issues they have had with their Gen 3 Magna's? Whether it be mechanical or build quality issues, I'd like to know.
Please elaborate.

3rd gen problems? Well, none really obvious ones. My family has two 3rd Gens (2001 Verada and 2003 VRX) No problems what so ever. Both Tiptronic automatic.
There are always those little nitty gritty things like a dodgey seal on the rear window, CV joins snapping (dont do standstills in the dry these wont break), the cover over the passengers side airbag not fitting correctly, etc etc
However, most of this stuff is Warantee repairable.
If u can afford them, go for a TJ+ 3rd gen. Tiptronic on TH's were trialed for the first time on sports models. I think TJ's had better cams as well over previous models.
Basically Engine wise, the 6g74 (3.5Litre V6) motor is a pearl, one of the gruntiest and refined motors I have driven (although havent driven that many cars lol)
Second gens, well, I know a whole bunch of big problems those have, particularly the 4 cylinder ones.
Hope this helps.

If you find a Manual Magna, Buy it.. I have the 6g72 3Litre in My TE Executive and it is an Absolute Stealth Fighter, the engine loves to rev, it is Quick off at the lights, a tad heavy on fuel but that can be fixed with the amputation of my lead foot..
My Parents have a 1999 Magna Altera LS and the only difference between theres and mine is mine has no electronic Gadgets or Cup holders and is quicker.. Both are unreal Cars to drive and compared to a Commodore or Falcon , the Build Quality is much better and the Magna's can Hold their own in the Traffic light Grand Prix..

this cars done 57,000km:
1. Handbrake requires adjusting (Dealer quoted $95, think I'll do it myself next weekend)
2. Automatic Aerial loose. @ the last service the dealer said he looked but didn't touch it because it wasn't Original equipment (??!! :o Holy Cow!! I bought this car from him) and has to charge me for adjustment. Didn't argue, returned home and tightened the retaining nut inside the boot myself.
3. Needs new shock absorbers, & I still haven't driven this car on gravel yet. Mazda mx-5 on stiffer suspension and smaller wheels seems to be handling bumbs better. The mazda's original shocks done 175,000km by the way.
Edit & Note to self: change dealer issued oil to synthetic next weekend - V6 sounds rough compared to 4 cylinder MX-5.

my problems have been with the alternator belt, but the original problem was screwed up 2 more tiems by mitsu, belt went at 70,000km's, the the alternator bearing died and killed alternator, the nthe tensioner , handbrake boot makes an oise every now n then, same can be heard in falcons too, a revised boot is meant to be avaiable but i havent got it
keep the car serviced and it will live a long life

in nearly 3 years with my TE, the only things to have need "fixing" rather than replacing (brakes, etc) is one cv boot and a rear wheel bearing collapsed.

Rear window seal, passenger airbag cover warping, front shocks replaced, srs light intermittent, drivers seat wobbly. Even with these things I love the car. Parents have had more trouble with a Merc and a Saab so it doesnt matter how much you pay.

Oh, and as for the topic question - nothing at all so far.
2002 Magna VRX.
1. Numerous reflashes of the ecu
2. New 5 speed auto gearbox
3. Left hand side CV Joint
4. Engine mounts (twice)
5. Handbrake slack
6. Fuel tank riser (the thing that measures how much fuel is left in your tank)
All done under warranty..

I haven't had any real problems (touches wood) which is surprising as my VRX cops an absolute hiding sometimes... I love this car! Its the engine is tough as nails and power delivery is out of this world :D
As for problems, nothing major really but...
1. Gear can be hard to put into first and can crunch into second occasionaly (especially when cold)
2. Passanger airbag cover warped a little
3. Engine mounts replaced under warranty (probobly because of axle tramp)
4. Stock clutch slips badly if you dump the clutch after 3000rpm (you shouldn't do this anyway lol)

Yeah, there was a recall about 4months ago for the power window modules in the doors. Both of mine went slow for a coulple of days, then stopped completely with them becoming stuck down  They said they wouldnt replace them, cos they were damaged before the recall, then my mate who is the foreman for the service department made mitsubishi give me new one for free :D saved me like $500!!

Slow power windows (but they still work)
Auto tranny being rebuilt at the moment under warranty (1.5 weeks and counting) :doubt:

Firstly, I'm wondering whether my car has sports suspension? The car doesn't sit any lower however it tends to ride much firmer and the damping is quicker ie the car settles faster after hits bumps or dips compared to my mommas 98 camry and even my mates cressida which sits on kings low and super lows. And I hear some of you guys and motoring journalists say how nice the magnas ride.
My car is a ex-mitsubishi co car which I bought under that diamond remanufactured scheme and still has the re92 bridgestones which came new when I bought it. Maybe it's the tires?
Therefore, does anybody here (maybe Mitsu employees  ) know whether any of these cars came with sports suspension?
As for the question:
A few niggles but I've learnt to live with them now:
Handbrake adjusted under service
Rear or front discs warped
Many ECU resets for the auto
Front seat moves sometimes when I corner
Front seatbelt holster makes squeaky noises when i corner to the right and my weight shifts onto it :D
k bye

wouldnt be anything to do wtih the tyres as seafood says, RE92 are crap poverty pack tyres that should be discarded at first opportunity, they do not affect suspension at all.

Unless you've got them pumped up to an extreme pressure like somewhere over 40psi. Then your ride will be VERY rough.

seen one that needed a VRS Kit.

I had engine replaced at 17000km's under warrenty (Due to bad piston knock/bore problem) Engine was rebuilt by me in 2002 for more power.
1 R/H front power window regulator replaced under warrenty
1 manual gearbox replaced under warrenty
No problems since the warrenty ran out in Oct 2002
Other than that its been all good in the 5 1/2 years ive owned it :D
By the sounds of it, it seems as though the major issues are gearboxes, power windows, and just fit and finish issues, correct?
The reason why I have asked is because, Im tossing up a decision to buying a wagon but Im at 2 minds as to which brand. Now I know 95% of the people on this forum will be biased, but for those of you who aren't biased, I need your constructive advice:
A bit of background info on reasons; I need a wagon for carting a 100kg electric wheelchair in, and to carry a full car load of people often. This happens multiple times a week, and and continues to happen in all road conditions. The car will need to have excellent traffic manners, and be able to plough up a hill with ease and it not constantly wanting to kick back and forth into gears while air con is running. While I am not doing this duty, I like to drive spirited, and enjoy driving something that can hold it's own. Ultimatly, it needs to commute heavy loads without major issues, and be reliable. The 'must have' features will need to be cruise control, dual airbags, power windows & cd player, Oh and needs to be tiptronic auto.

You read my mind. I was reading through your post thinking about those two cars and you already put them down. waha lol
Without being biased, both cars could fit your purpose however
- the falcon might not have as nice a ride with the rear leaf springs.
- build quality of the magna is generally better (especially the plastics used in the falcon ie. switches and door trim plastics feel flimsy)
-both boots should hold your wheel chairs ok
- I found I had more room in each direction in the Magna driver and passenger seats compared to the Falcon and a better drving position. This could be because the falcons seat is too high (even at it's lowest point but they are more comfortable seats) and the steering wheel is tilted away in a van like fashion.
- I also think the Magna engine has more character and sounds way better than the falcon when revving out (non turbo excepted as I have never driven one), something you might like to hear on your spirited drives.
These are just my personal opinions and I'm not having a go at the falcon, they were just things I've noticed when/after driving them.

Buy the TJII Magna Wagon.
All it needs is a little bit of help in the handling department by adding a rear sway bar.
I had a Falcon wagon a couple of years ago. Rolls like a barge in a gale, understeers dangerously, noisy, brakes fade after 2 hard stops.
Agricultural engine. Need I go on!!

Thanks for your input Billy. Yes, many people have told me the same things as regards to build quality and fit and finish. I personally dont know because I haven't looked at either car closely. But considering those facts, that would be something I am personally used to enjoying as I currently drive a 00 Subaru Liberty. They are great cars to drive if your by yourself, however, get a couple of people on board and she tends to struggle a bit. The reliability of those cars are excellent but sadly, the power aint enough. I would like to upgrade to the newer Liberty's but they are asking too much for what I can afford at this time, so I need something as good but cheaper to buy.
What's your thoughts on the whole FWD over the RWD saga? Is there any merit in what some say about FWD being understeering death traps? How can I improve the cars handling capabilites so that I wont get caught out?
Any advice on this would be appreciated?

I would go the Magna for a few reasons.
less issues with the Magna then the BA, BA's are a terrible car still don't know what it got car of the year by wheels but so did the camira.

Thanks Rob,
I too am a Ford guy at heart, and always will be, but I guess for me practicality comes first.
I agree with the economy issue, and the fact that the Magna's are very light. But is there still any major issues with reliability with the gen3 motors?
In saying that, I am still at 2 minds to know what to do at this point in time.

I have heard some 6cyl are reliable but more often than ot they come across with issues sadly. As mentioned, I will make my decision after I test drive them both.

As for your question regarding fwd vs rwd, I think that generally speaking it has more to do with how the car is setup in general ie. suspension tune, weight distribution etc than which wheels are doing the driving. A well setup front hoopy could well outhandle a rwd and vice versa.
Points I'd consider:
- Handling: For a family car, I think the Magna's are setup quite well. Sure, they have their fair share of body roll, but I find they grip well. I have tried on many a occasion to mine (which is stock) to understeer in the dry without success. And even in the wet, I find it's completely controllable, with next to no risk of the rear coming out upon throttle liftoff.
Steering: I found that the BA Falcon has much nicer steering feel without the torque steer and kickback of the magna which is, I think, pretty bad, even on mild stand still takeoffs.
Balance: I have read many motoring journalists mention that due to the falcons high drivers seat results in a hip point above the cars centre of gravity. Therefore, they say it feels as though you are sitting on top of the car, instead of in it. As a result they find it slightly disconcerting when driving hard and also affect the cars balance.
Hope this helps.
Ralliart - Sorry to hear of that. I hope you sort your issues out soon.
Billy - Cheers for that rundown.

As much as I love my KJ2 Verada wagon, with the need to carry the wheel chair and people the Falcon is the only choice. The Verada scrapes it's rear mudflaps and tailpipes on some driveways and speed humps with just the baby in the backseat and the pram, 20kg, in the boot. The Falcon wagon is also much bigger in the boot then the Magna, the pram touches both the seat and the taigate in my wagon but had space to spare in the Falcon. I can't comment on driving the Falcon as I still haven't driven one, I needed 1 with power pedals for the wife and couldn't find any at the time.

TL 70,000 kms serviced every 7,500 kms
1: outside rearview mirrors (both had marks on mirror backing - when sunlight hit mirrors, impossible to see any reflections). replaced under warranty.
2: idle was rough when "D" was selected (base idle set 200rpm too low). reset under warranty.
3: at about 60,000 km, auto transmission had a rough change between 2 & 3. ( at that service, did a auto trans service including fluid change ( free of charge ). no probs since.

I have a 98TF with 50k on the clock, front disk makes an annoying rubbing sound. Had it looked at/fixed twice and the brakes were machined 2k ago but the problem always comes back. Its very audiable with the window down.. Taken the front wheel off 5+ times, reseated the pad, bought a new pad, sprayed 7 litres of disk cleaner on it... goes away... 2 days later it comes back...

Other than that the car is faultless:)

Other than that, it is all sweet even after 9yrs!!
ah...the container, I wonder if they rectify the problem in 380? God its about time they change the quality of those plastics. Wow 9 years? took ya quite some time to join AMC I guess. you may have saved heaps! with all the advise here. I was here only 2 months and I save quite a bit.
As for your post on Auto transmission, I think is best to give it to Mitsubishi to deal with it rather then just trouble shooting it yourself. save u some trouble. Its not always the computer nor just fluid change.

yeah i checked my container on my tf today after reading about on ehre a while ago, the top lid part is cracked, fill it up, it started to leak, however the bottom part is still ok, so as long as i dont fill it right up, it will still last for awhile

1997 KE Verada Wagon, ~143000km
The only thing that's ever malfunctioned was the timing belt hydraulic tensioner... $400 just for the part.
2004 KL Verada Wagon ~5000km
The chrome is peeling off the passenger side front door lock knob thing.
Other that that... everything's sweet...

mine has been back twice for recalls, once for the fuel line (mine was ok) and once for the power windows (both front replaced) :doubt:
Recall on the front power windows for TJ Magnas..?
Never had that one.... However..
Drivers power winder failed during warranty and replaced no cost. Front passengers failed out of warranty and replaced by me with cost.
Does the Mitsubishi website list recalls?.... Off to take a look.
Also had a squeal in the handbrake from day one. Checked and dusted at each service. Noise didn't really go away untill it failed completely out of warranty. $140 to have the noise refitted.
Not happy Jan

Ohhh
Nah, I havent owned this car for 9yrs.
LOL!
I only just bought it from my uncle 2-3months ago, and im guessing that nothing has gone wrong with the car since he had it new, so thats why im assuming 9yrs with no problems.
Unless my uncle is lying to me?
But yeh the car is still as new.....
Im a happy camper!

I had a TE3ltr auto & had it in for warranty 16 times for auto probs. They put 2 computers in it and had it in peices 3 times but no result. I loved the car other than that so I got a TJ Sports Manual. So far its done 71000kms & had to replace front brake pads & machine discs. Other than that just normal services.

Here's one from left field.
Was treating the leather seats in the TJ series 2 with some McGuires stuff, pulled up both of the front head rests, and they were both broken underneath so that the leather covering hung down like a flap between the chrome poles which insert into the front seat. You would only notice if you pulled up the head rests to a higher position.
Now would this be a warranty issue?

Bought my Magna TE in June, have no real problems so far touch wood. only the slight vibrations at red lights which I hardly be bothered by it. No real issues with my auto transmission, have done 171ks and still runs good. Basic maintaince have been done by myself, once. Have not really spend on anything serious only my boot was getting wet due to the lights not properly fitted by other mechanic and cost me $100 to fix it as I knew nuts about magnas that time and still new with this car so I am learning from everybody here. Replaced (D) LED light in dash instrument panel. Done ATF change myself, even though there was absolutely nothing wrong with my auto transmission. Basically its all good so far for me. Whatever I spend was more of upgrade than repairs. Have not changed brake pads and tires since I bought it.
