Ok, well there comes a time in everyones life where you feel the need to buy a dvd system for your car (well me at least anyway) :D
I have been thinking about getting one for the past year or so now. Still haven't dicided if i will go for a DVD deck, like the pioneer, or if i will get a dvd player and separate screen.
My question is not about what type of dvd gear i should get, but rather how much you use it. As i don't wanna spend all this money to find that i don't use it.
Heres my situation, im normally the only one in the car for the most part, i don't have kids. so the only time i will have people in the car is with my gf, and when taking mates places.
So please tell me how much you use you dvd screens , ie for movies or tv. and if you have hooked up anythink else to it. i.e. playstation or x-box, reversing camera
Thanks a bunch.

do it !!!!!!!!
i wanted one for soooo long and i have never regretted getting one
as for music i just get them with the film clips now
used to have a slimline playstation2 hooked in through my last dvd player, dont any more too much hassle with the new player

DVD screens in my Opinion are a waste.. You cannot watch DVD's whillst in motion and if you have a Sound system thats big, you are either going to have to Idle the car to keep up the power or invest in a Portable Jump starter...
If on the other hand, it can play a Spectrum anyalyser or a Rear reverse camera with Night vision it might not be so bad..

I got that at home, so it would be pointless for me to do it in the car..
Rear mount TV Screens with Head phones would be a good idea.. and mount the front ones in the Sun visors so you can flip them up and alll will look stealth..

i find myself in the same situation mate..
i am going to buy a JVC dvd/mp3/cd/giga-mp3 deck, which is suprisingly going to only cost about $500
mainly for the dvd mp3 feature, 4.7gb worth of mp3s mmmmm
wont have to change a cd for weeks.....
but i will also get an indash screen, so i can see the selection, also can play the glorious sounding audio dvds.

Go for a budget system, viscom and brands like that, its just about the same as the more expensive units. I spent under $300 for my dvd and screen setup. Its good if you drive alot with friends and can chuck on video clips or as u mentioned want to sit in the car with your gf watchin movies. Or play ps2 or whatever. Kills time.
And yea as someone suggested a reverse camera is also good to have, i got mine mainly for the 'wank' factor.. its not all that useful, but its cool.. sorta. The Only cost around $40 - $60.. so its a small investment.
Id say, if you can get a nice setup for under $400ish, get it. Check ebay n stuff.
I use mine alot, have had it for about 6 or so months now and still lovin it.
Thanks for the feel back so far, but what i need to know is how much you use it. I know they look sweet but i don't wanna waist money if i aint gonna use iti use it every single day !!

I think it's a waste. If you cruise on the highway with other people in the car it might be worth it. I had one in my car and rarely used it. I got a caska all in one from japan for 500 bucks. Sharp screen, 4x50 watts, 6.5 inch screen, mp3, dvd, cd etc....
The quality of it really surprised a few of my mates who have put all there savings into there ice http://www.coagent.cn/index_en.php
Screen is 288800 mega pixels which isn't bad for the money your paying

What a huge waste of money, watching dvd on a tiny screen, save up invest in a huge plasma.
Mmmmm plasma...

We put one in my friends rex, and I thought it was gonna be so badass, but it made me sick watching it with the car moving, especially when watching car related dvd's .. also, it made my friends driving far worse because his attention kept drifting to the screen...and that was scary.

For the price on that Brash Imports site, I think I'm gonna buy a few now :-) One of my mates has head-rest screens, and one up on the dashboard, quite nice but he paid a fortune for them. I think if I were to ever use it, it'd be when I'm waiting to pick someone up, or when I go out and drink, and exceed the BAC level where I'd sleep in the car. That's about it though, other than that it'd have to be the biggest wank factor possible for a car :-)

The only reason I bought the caska was it did allot for the money, a pioneer single din was going to cost me 600 so I thought I might as well have it all for that type of money.

if you do it right it comes up looking good and you dont get sick watching it unless you buy a screen the size of a postage stamp
i dont use mine a great deal but the roof mounted screen is always on when i travel and no one ever complains about feeling sick watching it ... i put the front screen in so we could browse through the menu's easier instead of the kids doing it
but i do use it for music clips every now and then

I guess it all depends on how you use your car. If you've always got people in the car or are often taking long trips, then it will be a lot more useful. I have a Screen or two planned for the future, as this description basically fits me perfectly.
Also, my car is a promotion of myself and my business, so it's good to have. Sounds stupid, but when I turn up to a wakeboard event or the like, it's in my best interest to have people hanging out in and around my car, watching my videos.

DONT GET A CHEAPY ONE!!!
My bro bought a cheap lcd and dvd deck from ebay and 3 days later, the lcd screen blew up.
When it was in, it was really cool. We just put on music vids and **** like that. Porn was cool too but this was a no brand lcd and deck.
After it blew up, we took it to a techie and he said he wont fix it because he didnt know anyting about it
I took it apart my self, and the solder work was HORRIBLE!! some wires were torn and **** so we soldered it up, and it still didnt work
Also, the newer technology lcd can be looked at from any angle and wont dim.

I can't see a lot of use for it personally, I'd probably never use it. Might be handy to entertain the kids on longish trips but that's pretty rare for me, and they probably watch too much TV anyway. I'd probably go for a roof-mounted one if anything. 700MB of MP3s per CD is enough. :)

Gerard, where did ya get ya screen for under $300 ?
I got a viscom screen for $140 and a dvd player for $120
viscom is one of those 'good, cheapo brands'
ive had my system for over 6 months or so and have had No problems. There should be no reason for it to blow up or anything, unless its wired without a fuse or something
But yea, i only got it all cause it was cheap.

while where on the subject, I was thinking about installing in-car dvd for my kids
The set up I was thinking about would probably be:
A 5" monitor on each front seat and another on the LH sunvisor
A stand alone DVD player (to be mounted in the back seat) with remote and FM modulator to the existing stereo as well as sound to the monitors for headphone jacks. (so i don't have to listen to the same Wiggles songs over and over again)
To me that much is simple enough, but I would also like to be able to recieve TV signals on this system and also possibly run a PS2 and cameras mounted front and rear on it.
What I want to know is what would be the cheapest way to build this system
(it doesnt have to be the best but it has to be able to tollerate a 4yo's fingers)
is there any 12v DVD players/recorders available that have a tv recievers and auxilary AV inputs like a VCR? How would you set up this system to record from a "cop style" dash cam and mic?
