i used roughly 2 350g cans for the console, air vents, door handles, scuff plates
make sure u use K&H wax and grease remover
then plastic primer
then paint
then clear coat
lots of light coats are better to acheive an even look and no drips
all available from autobarn

This is a mod I've always wanted to do but have been paranoid about breaking the clips that hold it all in place. Are there any step by step guides on the best way to remove the console, air con vents etc etc?

the aicon vents should be only place to worry bout, in the workshop manual they use what look like 2 hooks to got into the vent, bascially make sure u use the same force on each side of the vent or u will break a clip like me

yer the freakin aircon vents.....cant get the ***** out..and i dun wanna pull to hard..
oh my goodness...i don't know how many times i've written a tute on how to do ur console.
Follow bain's tutorial, you will be fine.
1 tin or grease and wax remover (1L will last u a long time)
1 can of flexiprimer- this is a primer specially made for painting plastics
1 can of 350g spray can- colour of your choice. This lasted me entire console, instrument cluster outside surround, both air con vents and all 4 door handle surrounds
Surface Prep:
Begin by removing all the interior panels carefully. Follow bain's tutorial, you will be fine. After this, grab a rag, and clean all the panels thuroughly with the grease and wax remover. Ensure surface is free of dust, loose stuff and grease.
Now, you can sand the surface if you are really fussy and wear tight jeans. You're better off with a 2000grit wet/dry sand paper. If you have really bad imperfections, you could probably try a lower grit and work up to a finer one. Again, once your done, clean it with the grease/wax remover so there's no dust or loose parts on it.
Begin by spraying the panels with primer. Remember to follow the instructions on the can. Remember, it is better to do lots of thin coats than one big thick coat of primer. This ensures better coverage. Make sure it is dry (follow instructions). If you were really fussy, you could wet/dry sand this primer before you paint. I did about 5-7 coats of primer. Primer is very important in making sure the paint sticks to the panel especially in areas where u touch often...like door handle surrounds.
Now, we get to the painting part. Make sure you're in a warm-ish area, thats free of dust. Again, follow instructions on the can. Do a few light coats...and you can sand back the paint every once in a while with a fine grit wet/dry system. I did about 7+ coats on most areas.
Once you're finished, you should leave all the panels least overnight, or even 24 hours before refitting into your car. Best if you put them in a wam-ish place with no dust.
Since I used a colour called 'Metallic grey silver' I decided to grab a tub of wax and went over all the panels. I don't think it made much of a difference, but it made me feel all wamr and fuzzy inside.
I didn't do a clear coat, but if you want, you should probably very lightly sand the surface before you spray the clear coat. I'm not a fan of clear coat, becuse the high gloss surface is bound to piss you off when the sun shines onto it and reflects into your eyes.
I dont wear tight, leather jackets or pink shirts, so I didn't bother with sanding any of the surfaces, and clear coat. It turned out great. I did what was listed above, and its been over a year, still looks like it was painted yesterday. No chips, scratches or marks

personally i reckon EL gauges doin't look good with silver sprayed cluster surround, coz it's too bright.
black dial faces with silver surround is the best i reckon :P
