First post on this forum, just want to say hi. I was suprised and pleased to find an australian site dedicated to magnas. I couldnt find anything on the net about them and it was makeing me think how under appreciated they are.

Anyway I have a 98 Magna Advance (Manual). I need to get the rear bumper replaced and it got me thinking that I should mod it. I dont know a whole lot about cars, and was wondering what sort of performance mods people have done to their magnas? A few quick questions:

What are some good cheap mods? Cost?
Does major modification have to be done to the engine to support a low psi turbo?
Are turbo's even possible without going to great lenghs to strenghen the engine?

Basicly im interested in knowing if a Turbo is practicle, and what sort of disadvantages im going to see (engine wear etc)

Also another quick question, how much are body kits? I really have NO idea on priceing and dont want to go overboard.
Thanks everyone

hey mate welcome. U could get a vl turbo style turbo with about 4psi or whatever and they need not a whole lot changed. Cheap mods would be air filters replaced, new exhaust and those kindas of things. Theres a lot of stuff i would do before thinking of a turbo. Have ufn at the forums!

"they need not a whole lot changed"

Do you mind elaborating? I dont know whats considered alot or not.

Also any idea on how much im looking at?

Also I have NFI with all these letters, VL/VE/TE/TF
They make no sense to me.
I need to read up a bit more me thinks, all I know is that I have a 98 Advance, dunno what all that other stuff stands for

The VL is model of a holden which has a turbo and hte TE/TF is the model of the magna that you have.

Also you can get turbo kits that run at 5/6psi with no engine mods same with teh sprintex supercharger kit which will run on a stock engine.

and obviously your engine will wear quicker, also if your engine has about 200k plus running it on 5/6psi it wont last long.

eek, my engine does have about 200k on it (196 to be exact)

Does this mean that Turbo/Supercharger'ing my car would be a bad idea? The car has been serviced regually and is mechanicly fine. Obviously theres no better way to get a gian in performance then either a turbo or SC but if its going to be an obviously bad idea then

Just how much wear are we talking? If the engine going to automaticly die soon after putting on a turbo or are there other factors such as how often its serviced etc?
I want it to last, but I would like a tubo / SC
Also thanks for the help

If you want to know what to do with the engine such as a rebuild or something i suggest you contact www.rpw.com.au they have turbo kits available for the magna.

with allmost 200k on the clock i would not go for a s/c or turbo get extractors and cat back exhaust first you will love them then there are some other mods you can do like cold air intake ,pod filter there is a box being made for a pod on this site if you do a search even cams if you like
drive with these till you think you want more then save get the motor reconed and get your turbo then

im not saying he should use a VL turbo but im saying its an exmaple of a small turbo. If you changed your oil lots and generally looked after your car you engine wont suddenly blow up. It would increase engine wear but not like 100% it mihgt be say 25% so instead of lasting to 300,000k's it might only last to say 275,000 (not exact figures just and estimate) turbo's / superchargers are best bang for your buck i would think. Unless your gonna buy NOS and make your car a one run wonder

Thanks for all the info guys. When i get it serviced soon ill ask what they think as they would be able to tell me what kind of condition the engine is in. I would like the car to last me another 3-4 years though.

well at ur car age or mileage i'll say off with t/c or s/c if u want some gains try using some ems( engine management system) + some other easy mods.
